The Emergent Movement needs constant monitoring and refuting. It is especially important to critique the source and the implications of their ideas

One of the biggest challenges we have to face up to is that what is presented to us from modern liberal thinkers (such as Brian McLaren) as a 'conversation' (where there is a free and mutual exchange of ideas) is actually more akin to indoctrination or re-education - he has a definite 'hierarchy of ideas' and his place in that hierarchy is above that of conservatives that he looks down on:

Yes, I totally agree that our friend truth is not and never will be relative. I guess what I am arguing for is engagement and debate with the beliefs 'behind the error' in the hope of winning over some of those who sit in error. We are involved in a missionary exercise, I think.

Thanks for visiting my blog Manny - have a great day :-)

Jay Bakker, Tony Jones and Matthew Vines have beliefs that need to be debated. It is important to dig into their arguments and deconstruct them: the way they approach the concept of 'truth' can be a good place to start.

Precise and to the point and helpful! Thanks Ron!

I would also like to add one dangerous paradigm - "this is the latest thinking we have to keep up with the times!".

What is behind this dangerous paradigm is sometimes a dynamic called syncretism - where different and often contradictory beliefs are merged together to create a false impression of unity and relevance to the surrounding secular culture. There is a major movement to water down the central truths of Christianity. Some of this movement is coming writers such as Brian McLaren - leaders need to be aware of him and others like him.
