It's not secret that the US rating system is absolutely ridiculous. There are no real consistent rules for how ratings should be distributed, which just means that the ratings board can give the film whatever rating it FEELS the movie deserves without basing it on anything in particular. Additionally, the ratings board members have no background or expertise in determining what is appropriate for children.

I've really like what the folks at www.commonsensemedia.org do with film ratings (they also rate games, websites, TV, books and music). They give a specific age for which they think the film is appropriate (and it's not just 13 or 17) and they point out all the factors that lead to that rating, divided into different categories (Violence, Sex, Language, Message, etc.) so that you can focus on the ones that concern you the most. Additionally, their guidelines for determining what is appropriate for a specific age group were generated by child psychologists. Their system seems much more sound and transparent than the MPAA's and seems much more focused on actually communicating information so that parents can decide for themselves what their kids should be watching, rather than doling out ratings based on who gave them money or what their personal agenda is.

I loved her in Benjamin Button and Hustle & Flow, but she's not the type of actress that has managed to avoid crap before, so I don't think her involvement suddenly means the movie will be better. Mostly, I'm just disappointed that she's wasting her time on this.

This movie seems like it's going to trade on Snyder's name and style a lot more than any one actresses popularity. I mean, I do really like Seyfried, Wood and Stone, but I don't think they're actresses that are big household names or box office draws for most people. Obviously defections like these will make people speculate about the health of the project, but if they're just trying to cut the budget down by casting cheaper actresses (and if Jena Malone is making less than Emma Stone that just makes me sad, considering her incredibly length resume) that doesn't really concern me that much.

The more time I've had to think about this movie (I saw it Tuesday night) the more I love it. It's just so refreshing to see a film so bursting with ideas and things to say. I really recommend checking out the BBC miniseries, too. It's very good, albeit in different way (the blogger vs. journalism conflict is new in the feature film).

I do agree with you to an extent as I do think the feminist groups a going a wee bit overboard with this, especially since they're targeting the actor and not the guy that wrote the damn thing. However, I do disagree with your last paragraph. I think there are actually a lot of people out there that don't consider the scene in Observe and Report to be date rape (several people made this case in the chat on the /Filmcast Monday night) and the fact the movie makes light of it without acknowledging what it is doesn't help that problem. I'm in no way blaming the filmmakers for the ignorance of those people. But I think that most people who see films with murder or other similar illegal activities know that those things are crimes. Date rape is, sadly, one of those things that is still a gray area for a lot of people and thus, I think the equivalency you draw with other crimes depicted in film is a false one.

What a waste of an incredibly talented and witty actress. *pout* I miss Veronica Mars.

Oh, I'm no defender of Burton especially on this topic, I was merely bringing him up as support for the piece of the post that I quoted.

"There’s some kind of consensus opinion that a director well suited to a superhero film is a director who loves the source material. I don’t agree with that at all. The right director is, plainly and simply, a good director."

Tim Burton has certainly vocalized disdain towards comics and many were pleased with his Batman movies.

Chabon's been a huge favorite of mine since Kav & Clay and Wonder Boys so I'm incredibly interested in anything he's attached to. So, yes, I'm dancing a little. But quietly, and in my chair. :)

I definitely did hate the movie, certainly not as much as you, but it certainly did sit well with me either and I think you gave voice to several of the reasons why, especially the incredibly hollow and shallow female lead.
