Additionally, the states did try to shut down amazon and ebay by forcing them to pay state taxes but, the Federal government stepped in and gave a temporary reprieve to companies that only work online (no brick and mortar retail presence) and how they have to pay taxes. Buy anything from any site that has actual brick and mortar stores and you will pay taxes on what you purchase even though you purchased it online.
Online Gambling was shut down, not just because it was difficult to police but also because there was no system in place to collect taxes on the profits and winnings (made even more difficult by the fact that many of the companies were overseas). I would bet you one of my paychecks that if they come up with a system to track and tax it, Online Gambling will become legal again. :)
