This reply is quite late, but I haven't checked out MarkDoesStuff for a while and I just discovered Mark Watches PoI so I've been trawling through the whole archive. I wouldn't have commented at all, but I feel the need to point out that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has a main character, Skye*/Qnvfl Wbuafba/Dhnxr, who started as a hacker**, who also happens to be half-Chinese***. Chloe Bennet, the actress who plays her, is also half-Chinese, her birth name is Chloe Wang, and she has stated that she took her father's first name (Bennet) as her stage name because Hollywood racism :( , which is why you may not be aware of her character.

Right?! I was so shocked when I first saw your comment, because for a moment I thought I'd only imagined or dreamed my memories of borrowing and re-reading WotE countless times and did that mean that my whole life was a lie?! (Edit: iirc there were actually two or three copies on the shelf at any one time, and just at that one branch - probably about twenty in the whole system - when I was an active borrower) I've just been like "well, this is Singapore" and made peace with so many issues, but this was about BOOKS and public libraries' mission to serve the public interest, so I put my foot down.

Again, this is rather late, but if you see this, I have the epub if you're interested! Email me at gmail! It might take me a bit of time to get back to you as I don't check this account frequently, but it'll happen!

This is rather late, but...

That's weird, because I've borrowed WotE multiple times from the Bishan branch over some months about five years ago (?). In fact, that's where I found out Tammy'd written WotE, because that branch has a pretty good collection of Tammy's books and also just YA in general. But then again, the times when NLB probably thought I was dangerously addicted to re-reading Tammy was such a long five years ago, and I haven't been to any library for some time now because (a) life took me overseas, and (b) since that whole ridiculous censorship saga last year, I vowed never to patronise any public libraries again unless attitudes and policies changed (so now I actually buy books). My guess is that someone reported the book and/or our dear library board decided to do an internal review, and then because it's rather explicitly stated that Qnwn vf tnl, WotE has been removed from the catalogue. (Just another reason to continue buying books...)

Random: because I never had an MRT station near me growing up, I always reserved books! I could always wait because school kept me busy, and most of the time I just wanted to re-read. Plus, nowadays it's way more likely that the bus/train fare to get to the library that has the books I want would exceed the reservation fee.

(Sorry for blathering on! Dear me, I've been away for sooooo long. Life, ugh. Just dropping in to lurk randomly to see how far along Mark is on the Circle books, sigh)

I think the City of the Gods can't really be influenced by Corus the way the University of Carthak can be influenced by the Emperor for a few reasons:
a) It's way too far north. Thom rides north from Trebond to get there and Trebond's a fief on the Scanran border. Distance is usually a huge factor in terms of influence, which is to say that it's easier for City folk to ignore Corus since they're so far away.
b) Religion. Mithran high priests and other religious folk can afford to ignore the Crown to a certain extent because of their status as people acting on behalf of the gods. In Squire, when deciding on whether they should start the ball rolling on changing the law Joren trampled all over, Jon and Thayet consider the Mithrans and Goddess-folk as important political factions whose support is at least hugely useful if not very vital.
c) um there was supposed to be something here but I... forget because I haven't slept in 24 hours. Heh.

Anyway, so having the City of the Gods is nice to brag about but not really useful when it comes down to it, I guess

I've seen this in the comments before but it wasn't addressed properly so here goes: Regarding Achoo's fertility, after Beka rescues Achoo in the last book, she notices while examining her or cleaning her up or something that Achoo's womb is closed by a magical sign etched into her collar and Achoo clearly had one or two litters before. I'm guessing that by "first litter" Beka means to let Achoo have puppies that she actually gets to keep and bring up? Otherwise Tammy just forgot this minor detail, and I don't really blame her, considering what a huge undertaking this book was haha

I thought about this before, and my conclusion was that Tammy hadn't thought that much about the structure of the Rogue while writing the Alanna books because she was building an entirely new world. Mainly I'm basing this on the fact that George didn't seem to have district chiefs, just a trusted circle of thief folk. And Tammy's said that she can't bear to revisit the Alanna books so I'm guessing that she missed this detail. Or it could be that in the process of writing Terrier, she realised that the Court of the Rogue had to have much more structure and organisation to it so the doggy books are retconning it. ...If setting books more than a hundred years before counts as retconning, anyway.

The most plausible explanation I've come up with that works in canon is that since Tortall's calmed down so much from the end of the doggy books to the beginning of Alanna, the criminals reorganised themselves...? Or some Rogue post-Rosto, if not Rosto himself, convinced all the other Rogues that swearing allegiance to the Corus Rogue was a good idea.

I'd just like to note that I've been reading Tammy interviews lately and in one of them she said, paraphrased from memory, that magic is a huge gender equality enabler because it's difficult to oppress a whole gender when they can curse you behind your backs. This is also a reason why she loves writing fantasy. Dunno if this has been mentioned before but it popped into my mind while reading comments.
