I love this book and all its icy strangeness. Favorite quote:

"I am not trying to say that I was happy, during those weeks of hauling a sledge across an ice-sheet in the dead of winter. I was hungry, overstrained, and often anxious, and it all got worse the longer it went on. I certainly wasn’t happy. Happiness has to do with reason, and only reason earns it. What I was given was the thing you can’t earn, and can’t keep, and often don’t even recognize at the time; I mean joy.” -Genly Ai

This website got me through a stillbirth when I didn't think I'd ever laugh again. Thank you.

I had to physically restrain myself from pushing the Report button on this gif. Now I can't stop watching it. God have mercy.

This week I've discovered something. I too had a evangelical childhood, was forced to read The Five Languages, and have an encyclopedic memory for weird fairy tales.

But with this article I just realized: Toasties, I AM Mallory. She is always, always in my mind: not as a pleasure, any more than I am always a pleasure to myself BECAUSE SHE'S WRITING ABOUT MOTHS.

God doesn't stand a chance. Bets on Mallory.

Reading this makes me feel like Calvin O'Keefe meeting Meg Murray's family in A Wrinkle in Time.

Can I be a Hamilton? Meg/Kathryn, do you know how lucky you are?

I owned a cockatiel once that I loved enormously. However, the experience convinced me never to own birds again or keep any winged thing in a cage. They are so extremely intelligent and social and they are meant to be free. Parrots are probably ten times smarter than cockatiels and I can't imagine what captivity must do to them.

I tried multiple times to get through "All the Light We Cannot See" on audiobook. I couldn't figure out why it was such a chore to get through. The narrative dragged on and on and the parts with Marie-Laure were especially slack. I found the father-daughter dynamic definitely a little weird.

Your essay is very enlightening. Thanks so much for writing about the depiction of blind people in this novel.

Oh man, I have tried to get into Parks & Rec SO hard. Inevitably fall asleep through the first season every time.
