Thank goodness for email notifications! Yes, she drew it right there--even more of a super-genius than we'd previously believed!

Toasties:

Administrative Professionals’ Day is coming up in about a month, and since this is basically the only thing in my life that I can’t rely on my awesome assistants to coordinate, I’d love your creative input.

I have two admin assistants, both of whom are in their early twenties and are incredibly hardworking and thoughtful young women. Every gift list I’ve found is dreadful (consider a motivational soup mug with matching spoon! have you thought about a lady bear in a skirt suit?), but now I’ve overthought the whole thing and am second-guessing all of my ideas. Any recommendations for gifts to show my appreciation of my awesome admins?

Toasties of academia:

The nonprofit for which I work is considering creating a research director position, responsible for identifying research opportunities related to our healthcare/social services for high-risk populations and coordinating work with academics interested in doing research relevant to our population (not clinical trials, per se, but public health/social science research).

Two questions:

(a) The state of the academic job market makes my boss convinced we can scoop up a Ph.D. at cut-rate prices. Feels shady to me. What is a reasonable salary that is respectful of the amount of time and effort early-career public health/social sciences Ph.D.s have put into their careers thus far?

(b) If we created this position, where should we recruit for it?

Ugggggggh, I used to supervise a guy in his fifties who called me "boss" all the time (I was, like, 30 at the time) and it was so awful but never anything I could call him on.

Hello, fellow uberpale. I'm a pink and white person and generally have a horrible time finding foundation that works. For really full coverage, Nars in Siberia works well for me (the yellower undertones help cancel out some of my natural pinkness without being so yellowy as to look really fake--it's more color-correcting than mismatched). Illamasqua has some really super-pale foundations, but I found them difficult to apply well (that is, not good for a makeup newb) and even with a decent application, kind of cakey after a few hours. For daily wear, I really like Missha's Perfect Cover BB in #13 ("light milky beige"); the description of it as "beige" threw me at first because I'm not very beige at all, but it's actually a really, really light-colored BB that can be layered for a little more coverage but still a pretty natural look.

Does this mean Jolie Kerr might return, too, after the great Gawker exodus?

Mirena makes my periods so weird. I don't actually bleed at all, but I still get the other physical symptoms (backache, gastro stuff) and the emotional stuff. It's better, I guess, but so weird.

I was staggered when I read the article. It never occurred to me that patients on hold could be recruited for studies: the whole point of a hold is that patients can't make good decisions about keeping themselves or others safe. It's the entire reason that such a violation of civil liberties is permitted. How could they possibly be deemed fit to consent to participate in research? Who on earth was on the IRBs that signed off on these studies?

I have super-sensitive skin and I've never had a problem with it? I find it's most effective when I use it after a bath, so my skin is already softened when the booties go on.
