what I cannot find online is a version of a story in this weeks oldham advertiser, featuring a poor chap dragged down the road by a taxi following some fare dispute. The same company 'village cars' also has another recent incident tagged where the passenger had his ears removed by the driver and some of his associates.
What would we do without our cultural enrichers?

I think it's worth getting their reps out, getting a quote from them and verbally placing an order. Play them out for as long as poss on a cashflow stall, then politely blow them out stating why.

Wouldn’t it be great if the funding of all the bleeding-heart-liberal societal drains were optional? Imagine a tax return form like this;

Optional add-on subscriptions to your Income Tax, 3% deductions per selection.

 Yes, I wish to support immigrants and their families, please levy my income tax accordingly
 Yes, I wish to support child benefits beyond 2 kids, please levy my income tax accordingly
 Yes, I wish to support ethnic minority groups/associations, please levy my income tax accordingly
 Yes, I wish to support unemployed with benefits above basic subsistence, please levy my income tax accordingly
 Yes, I wish to support prison inmates beyond subsistence food & shelter, please levy my income tax accordingly

I think the truth is somewhere between. I'd say 72 million, today. A walk through Oldham Town Centre on any weekday shows me this, just in the volume and change of faces in the last 7-8 years.
As you say, waste is definitely a huge issue, but it's not a new phenomenon and, I would have hoped, would have been factored into the report described in 'facts on a plate', rather than simply using gross food sales figures.

As an aside, Alan Johnson doesn't lie in bed worrying about Britains population climbing to 70 million, because he's pretty damn sure we crossed that threshold already.

Regarding the uncertainty in our population, I am starting to give a lot more credence to this 2-year-old article from the Indy. Possibly a lot less crackers than I thought.

It gives me great pleasure to recap on the plight of the venomous MEN spider which earlier this year had to retract it's foul hairy 'Oldham Advertiser' arm from it's Oldham office, remaining staff are now probably in a broom cupboard at MEN HQ - chortle
