I loved Braveheart, too....until, admittedly, I read some good non-fiction about William Wallace and Mel became an anti-Semite, lol. Now he's on my Russel Crowe List....good actors who behave badly so I can't pay money to see their work anymore. Arggggh.

You might just love Gregory....go into it with an open mind (and a good history reference book at your side, ha ha ha). And thanks for the recommendation of the Pearl Earring novel...I have a copy and you all are surely convincing me I need to read it. :)

I'm hoping Big Kid will. Little Kid is only 3, so she'll probably hate me for taking her before solid memories could be formed. Oh well. An excuse to go again, right?

Yes, I'll tell you what the atmosphere was: freaking cold!

oh, and another PS....have you gotten your hands on Margaret George's latest on Elizabeth I? I'm about half through and it's just mind-blowing-ly fabulous so far. :)

Yay for de-lurking, Tara! So glad you added your perspective! And you're right - there is such a plethora of good writers out there showcasing all ends of the spectrum and half the fun is discovering them. (Ok, I admit to not being a Maxwell fan....her Grace O'Malley novel gave me eye twitches)

But love the examples you provided here. And there's nothing wrong with enjoying Wideacre, LOL...I didn't, but so what? No one cares what I think anyway, that's the fun of having a blog, ha ha ha!

ps....never read The Green Darkness, but will you hate me forever if I confess that I didn't like Katherine?

I don't really quibble too much with the writing (okay, except for the M-word). But agreed - it's her touting herself as such an accurate researcher/historian. Pfft.

Have you seen the lawsuit that JRR Tolkien's estate filed over someone using Tolkien as a character in a HF novel? Libel of character, I believe. Wouldn't that be something if they won....huge ramifications for HF writers. I plan a post on the lawsuit next week....

Taylor - you're not the only one who cut their teeth on Gregory and you're absolutely correct: she deserves kudos for reviving the genre. And believe it or not, one of the only books of hers that I enjoyed was The Other Queen, which everyone else hated. Go figure?

She just made me laugh out loud. And I thought *I* got worked up....now I don't feel so bad. Gregory is a library read....every library has tons of them available. I would never recommend buying one unless you're a die-hard fan (and obviously, there are a lot of those out there or she wouldn't be as rich as she is, ha).

well, you never know with Blogger....9 times out of 10 it's acting up. Again. And again.
