I'm a director, and I've always had the theory that every play has one scene that is the "dream ballet." It's a scene that doesn't advance the plot, seems out of character and/or makes no damn sense. This theory was born of the first two scenes you mentioned, and has held true throughout my life.

I have never read House of the Spirits, but I also have not seen the movie, so I feel like that evens things out.
