I personally love it, & am almost never disappointed! I read the book, too, & really liked it. However, it's kinda like, tailor-made for me. All my interests, bundled up into a tidy audio package, so it's hard to go wrong.

!!! Yes! I have people speak to me in Spanish all the time and then I get weirdly embarrassed for the alternate-universe Katie who is part Latina & shamefully doesn't speak Spanish. It's like... isn't it enough to have all kinds of weird shame about my ACTUAL heritage? Do I also need to be ashamed for not being "enough" of something that I'm not any of?
I wish my brain would chill out.

I also just remembered my favorite weeaboo story. My mom was walking with her husband & his young teen weeaboo son in the mall. They passed some kind of store that sells, idfk, anime body pillows and stuff. The son said something to the effect of "there's my people."
My mom stopped. "Your people?"
"Yeah. Japanese."
She had to take a lap while his dad told him that just because he calls everyone a "baka" & lived on okinawa for 2 years doesn't mean he's Japanese.

Gina Mei's piece really hit me. I'm 3/4 white, 1/4 Japanese, but look very white. I don't really speak Japanese, but there are so many things that I feel I can't say & things that I feel I can't wear without looking like a douchebag while all these fucking anime kids are out here being ~~~kawaii as hell~~.
I even feel weird about my mom calling me by my middle name, which is Japanese. I've forced myself to use "Katie Aki" in my art & online presences to remind myself that it is my name, the one I was born with, and I'm entitled to have it.

I once got a hair wash in a salon that I never knew existed and could never find again. They had a special hair washing room that was dark, the chairs laid down flat, there was like, soothing music, no one was allowed to talk. It was PURE MAGIC & I'm pretty sure I was in some kind of liminal space, under a mound or something.
