I have been listening to my Loreena McKennitt Pandora station for days now. I will have "Star of County Down" in my head for weeks but it is worth it.

I...still wear it occasionally?? It's *almost* black but I just think it looks cool...however the older I get the less I care about what makeup I am supposed to or not supposed to be wearing

I read those!! Do you remember the trippy one where Jessica gets stuck in the fairy tale world at the theme park? And all the theme park characters turn real??

Dark Lord of Derkholm is SO GOOD, I love the way it sends up every fantasy trope while also having a real story of its own

I am a English teacher! And my favorite book to teach is Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Adichie; also, James Baldwin's "Notes of a Native Son" and August Wilson's "Fences". I also had a lot of fun teaching Oscar Wilde's "An Ideal Husband" and also Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Sylvia Plath.

Have we talked about Nicola Griffith's Ammonite here yet? It's about an anthropologist who goes to a planet where a virus killed all the men and the women are somehow reproducing.

I would like someone to yell about it with, because as good as Griffith's prose and worldbuilding and characters are, I think she is just pretty bad at plot, and promises all sorts of things that are never delivered, and I keep reading anyway because it's so good and then I get frustrated because we've spent fifty pages sitting in a hut beating a drum and skinning rabbits. I had the same problem with Hild!

Should I give it another chance? I started it, and was so annoyed with a) the narrator's woe-is-me pretension when his life seemed basically fine and b) the complete lack of female characters other than a single one who is only seen through the eyes of the male narrator.
