There is a line from Harvey that is basically that same advice, and it always gets to me-

"Years ago my mother used to say to me, she'd say, "In this world, Elwood, you must be" - she always called me Elwood - "In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant." Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me. "

My family used to keep rats, but only as food for the snakes. I kept my distance from the whole process but I assume the snakes were fed to a proportionally more horrifying creature and so on, until at midnight on Midsummer's-Eve the ghoulskitters were fed to the Dark Patience and a bountiful harvest was ensured

'As you splash along the track,
Eyes alert and ears pinned back,
You may have seen those queer square turds,
And thought; if not expressed in words,
"The stress of such a defecation;
Baffles ones imagination."
But it is not done to entertain us,
The wombat has an oblong anus.
So if your slumber is disturbed,
By cries and screams; don't be perturbed,
Eyes tight shut, teeth grit in pain,
The wombat's gone and shat again.'

Is this it?

Eleanor Vance escapes Hill House and drives away, not back to her sister and her brother-in-law but to a little cottage in the countryside. There are sunflowers, and a drowsy cat, and people passing by pause to appreciate her(but never stay and talk).
