Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

The protagonist growing up in a household where she learned to always be on watch for signs from the people around her on how to behave and then going to her Auntie's house where it was ok to just be, I would have loved to read that as a kid.

The Summer Book by Tove Jansson (the author of the Moomin books).

It is beautiful and heartbreaking and human and really, the toastiest of books, just listen to the Wikipedia summary:

"An elderly woman and her six-year-old granddaughter Sophia spend a summer together on a tiny island in the gulf of Finland exploring, talking about life, nature, everything but their feelings about Sophia's mother's death and their love for one another."

Finished Emma a few days ago! Such hilarity, so many cringes. I didn't know Clueless was based on the book until around half-way in, and discovering Josh in Mr. Knightley and Tai in Harriet while reading was exceedingly delightful!

Now I'm reading Oranges are not only Fruit which is great so far.

Uggh. The Manchild With All The Feelings who told me for months that he would break up with his girlfriend to be with me, only to beg her to take him back as soon as he realized she was fine without him, very fittingly gave me this book. So much man-pain.

Your frog was a fearsome food eater, widely respected! Your frog was a vampire. Your frog was rather evil, and feared in some provinces. Your frog's highest leap was 5 feet. Prodigous! :D

When I used to blog (in a language with less native-speakers than Dutch), commenting on other blogs that I liked using my (linked) blogname helped. The people whose blogs I commented on started reading and commenting on my blog as well.
