I watched the convention and when Rep. Giffords and the DNC Chair included "under God" in the Pledge. I felt sick. I got flashbacks to George H. W. Bush when he said that he did not think that atheist should be considered citizens. The Democratic Party wants me to support them and come together as citizens for the nation. How can that happen if I was just told that I am not a citizen because this nation is, according to the Party, "under god"?

I always ask, When? Same goes for someone who says "Bless you" after I sneeze.

Look into Camp Quest. If there is not one in your area then think about starting one. Hope that helps. Take care.

You asked "How do we cope...?" I find that resignation works. Not to the point of giving up but understanding the cycle of birth to death and not stressing. Mt father just died and in the eulogy I added this bit of wisdom.

WHY SHOULD I FEAR DEATH?
WHEN I AM, DEATH IS NOT.
WHEN DEATH IS, I AM NOT.
WHY SHOULD I BE AFRAID OF THAT WHICH DOES NOT EXIST WHILE I DO?

and

JUST AS WHEN WEAVING
ONE REACHES THE END
WITH FINE THREADS WOVEN THROUGHOUT
SO IS THE LIFE OF HUMANS

I couldn't agree more. I have found through the years that empathy and understanding, not ridicule or condescension, works better when communicating your message.

The use of the word "know" is generous. The word "know" should be in parentheses, perhaps?

As for thinking about death, I thinik it is healthy. The cover is blown and the surprise is blunted when it comes if you have thought deeply about that time for you or loved ones. My father died recently and although a longtime catholic priest friend said some words about his gods' love, wisdom, and the peace in an afterlife I made it a point to share with the other mourners a bit of secular wisdom and celebrate his life.
"Why should I fear death? When death is...I am not. When I am...death is not. Why should I fear that witch does not exist when I do?"

(But preparation isn't a bad thing...)
