I moved here because boyfriend got into grad school despite never having really felt any pressing need to live here. I complained a lot about how everything smelled weird and there are no trees and no animals other than disgusting pests and toothpaste is like $7 and my apartment is miniature. All of these things are still true. But it has still somehow grown on me tremendously! Like a weird subway fungus. Sorry, that's not very encouraging. There is sort of this weird vibe about NYC that people are like "YOU MUST LOVE IT MORE THAN LIFE AND MONEY ITSELF OR YOU WILL NEVER BE HAPPY" and that's just not true, it is entirely possible to be somewhat ambivalent but still mostly happy if slightly poorer than you would be elsewhere.

I follow The Skint, Brokelyn, and NonsenseNYC for stuff to do, plus Time Out NYC and DNAinfo. Also take lots of walks and make excuses to poke around unfamiliar neighborhoods - I'm not great at just going somewhere for no reason, but if I found an article that, say, the best cannolis in NYC are out in Bushwick, I would take a mini day trip out there.

Also trying to join the FB group and not hearing back probably just means our beloved overseer is backed up on requests, but as someone mentioned, a post has been made in the group and it will probably be addressed soon.

I am in the deepest Inquisition fandom hole right now. I read 75k of Cullen/Dorian that went bad on me after the first 30k or so but I COULDN'T STOP. I spent four hours on the kinkmeme yesterday. Please send help.

At last, the opportunity to share my suggestions for how to choose the perfect karaoke song! Assuming you are the sort of person who gets stressed out about this sort of thing, like me, and not the sort of person who will just get up there for any damn thing.

- Know at least 95% of the words
- More or less in your vocal range and/or level of commitment - you probably cannot hit Freddie Mercury's high notes but sufficient enthusiasm will negate this if you go all-in
- Well-known enough that most people will probably be able to sing along
- Fun enough that they will want to
- Doesn't just repeat the chorus 80000 times. "Bills Bills Bills" seems like a perfect karaoke song until you end up singing the same three lines for the entire last two minutes.

Oh man I have tried like a billion natural deodorants on my quest for The One. It is an uphill struggle. I recently discovered Herban Cowboy (I think they might be newish?) and the honeymoon phase is going great, we are very much in love, though summer will be the true test of our relationship. They sell it at Whole Foods and assorted other overpriced "natural" grocery stores. http://www.herbancowboy.com/

I love Bob's Burgers for when I'm feeling kind of down. It's just so positive and not at all mean-spirited.

Adding insult to injury the whole thing was in italics.

I wish I were joking.

So I used to work at a really terrible job at a chapter of a large religious undergraduate organization at a very prestigious university. At one point during my time there, the executive director had to send out a very serious memo about something that had happened and was causing a fair degree of controversy. I will give you exactly one guess as to the font he chose to email this memo in. To our board and approximately 10,000 donors, students, and alumni.

("I wanted it to be friendly, like handwriting," he said when I tried to point out this may not have been the best choice.)

I am a super jealous person dating a very non-jealous one and it is definitely a bit weird. The biggest thing for me is that my boyfriend not immediately dismiss my concerns, which seems counterintuitive, but just being like "you're being ridiculous that would never happen" is not helpful! Whether it is a based-in-reality fear of hers or not, it is still a REAL one that needs to be addressed like any other real, valid thing that is making her upset.

Conveniently I work from home on my own laptop! To the Google I go.
