Please tell me we are also going to talk about this at some point, because I just cannot even: http://www.slate.com/articles/double_x/doublex/20...

Like sure, I get that there needs to be due process for sexual assault cases on college campuses, but come on Prudie, you're against affirmative consent because it's...silly? And recentering the conversation about sexual violence to make men the victims? I just...ughhhhhhh.

This is all so intriguing and helpful! As a character, Avis is from a socially and economically privileged background, so I imagine that's how she would have gained access to European artistic training. In my work on this novel, I'm really interested in the way Phelps depicts (and critiques) symbols of international status and prestige, so looking into a bit more of this background about artistic training might help me explore that question. Thanks, Toasties!

Ah, yes, thank you for the clarification! (And for the lead on the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts...I will definitely do more reading about that.) I'm drawing from Alan Wallach's discussion of the museum "boom" in the 1870s in the US, which led to the formation of the Met in New York, the MFA in Boston, and the Corcoran Gallery in D.C. As you point out, there were definitely galleries and academies earlier in the century, but Wallach marks the establishment of these kinds of national museums as a turning point in American art culture.

And yes, the novel does talk about her training: she studied in Paris, I think under the tutelage of an established artist. I know it was common for male artists to train in Europe--do you have any sense of how common this was for young women?

Hmmm...I have a couple of novels in mind that include, among other crazy plot points: an artist's hallucinatory vision of armies upon armies of women (which later provides inspiration for a painting), melodramatic trekking through Florida swampland, blatant misandry ("Marriage is a profession to a woman. And I have my work; I have my work!"), a colossal train wreck, surprise cross-dressing, and nineteenth-century ladies trying to Have It All.

Does that sound like the makings of something someone would read the shit out of?

And also, sweet use of the Fuseli image. That painting is creepy as fuck.

Is this the appropriate place to brag that Zadie Smith is coming to speak at my university? Because she is. And I am ridiculously excited to go hear her. Love love love Zadie Smith! Bookmarking that article for later.

Just did day three, and all I have to say is...ARE YOU KIDDING ME with those downward dog pushups! I had to do them hanging off of my bed and they were still hard. Owowowowowow.

But I'm really loving this series! I'm an avid runner and have been wanting to work more strength training into my routine. Looking forward to subsequent installments!
