Just due to where my training was, I didn't have any super long runs during Whole30. I think the farthest I ran was 10, which was towards the end of Whole30 and I did completely fasted (no fuel before or during, just water). Any longer than that, and I need something. I've currently been experimenting with more protein pre-long run (a couple hardboiled eggs) and then fueling with these energy balls or dates/Larabar/dried fruit during, and it's gone well so far. It's still kind of a sugar bomb, but it's natural sugar!

The book goes into a little more detail about doing a Whole30 as a vegan or vegetarian. I just went back to check, and they suggest fermented dairy (like yogurt and kefir) and fermented sources of soy like tempeh for non-meat protein. And of course, there are eggs. I think it would be nearly impossible to do a vegan Whole 30, but if you're willing to do eggs, yogurt, fermented soy, and soaked beans, it could work.
One of my rants about how people portray paleo is that it's like all about meat, kind of like Atkins was, when it's much more about eating lots and lots of veggies with some high-quality animal protein and good fat sources.
I think the website has a shopping list for veg*ns doing Whole30 as well.

Yay! I have some runner friends who do keto, and it's definitely similar. I actually forgot that one of my big tips was to do it with someone; it really helps.
Favorite paleo IG accounts: katsnibs, stupideasypaleo, whole30, paleo_master_nia, eattrainlove. I also just browse the #paleo and #whole30 hashtags from time to time. It's usually very inspirational. Same on Pinterest, though a lot of times, #paleo brings up a lot of paleo "treats" which are not Whole30-compliant.

Definitely. I'll certainly splurge now and again, but most of the meals that I make at home will be paleo. One of the things Whole30 emphasizes is off-roading responsibly post-Whole30, meaning to splurge only when you really want it or its a very special occasion (like a wedding, etc.).

I'm not a stickler about my stock. I had a carcass from a rotisserie chicken, so I just used that plus some leftover celery, carrots, and onions, some peppercorns, and a few bay leaves. Parsley would've been nice, but I use what I have on hand!

Awesome! I usually rely on Hal Higdon's plans for training plans, and I just modify to my schedule/needs. You can also use the SmartCoach feature on Runner's World to come up with one as well. Good luck!

I used Tofurkey sundried tomato & basil sausage, though I think there are better options at Whole Foods. The bouillon is in a jar - I used Better than Bouillon (vegetarian). I don't really know how much flavor it added, so you could potentially skip it.

I ate leftover lentil fritters and cabbage slaw for lunch today instead of something that sounded better.

This chapter made me think of a Stanley Hauerwas quote that I think of often: "Being a witness... means to live in such way that one’s life would not make sense if God did not exist."
Speaking a peaceful word rather than getting sucked up into an angry debate, heeding correction rather than standing my ground NO MATTER WHAT, and living a life of humility rather than seeking out earthly wealth - all of these are part of being a witness to God's love through Christ. And, oftentimes, they are completely counter-cultural. May I seek God's wisdom in following Christ rather than the "folly" that our common culture often represents.
