I hadn't thought about that. It could be that the suit is neither sealed nor using canned air when in a breathable atmosphere; it would be a waste of resource. If he fell into water, he likely wouldn't have enough time to switch modes before his helmet filled with water. Even if the suit sealed up after that, he would need some way to purge the water from his helmet while submerged to not drown.

Honestly, it's not that ridiculous. Think about it: heavy armor is well...heavy. It's not a matter of strength or swimming skill on the part of the wearer; it's a matter of buoyancy.
