You should read Neil Gaiman's short story The Problem with Susan. It's definitely dark and twisted, but it's pretty cool.

Oh geez, this show. I'm glad you're getting to watch it; the combination of suspense and artistry and UTTER PAIN is right up your alley. I'm excited to read your take on it!

Can I just say the acting in this is just ridiculously amazing? I mean, I know they're just doing their jobs, but WOW. How Hugh Dancy slides through all these serial killers' minds, but you never stop feeling Will's abject horror at having done so? And Mads. I haven't actually seen Silence of the Lambs (I know, I know, it's on the list), but I have an idea how Hopkins played Hannibal and it's neat that Mads is going in a totally different direction with it. He is able to communicate so much with just the tiniest facial quirk.

Also also, I <3 Beverly in this episode. I like that you see her build a camaraderie with Will, but it's not necessarily romantic. And Alana...! Freddie is fabulously deplorable. Anyhoo...

In case you didn't know, Cleolinda has done recaps of the first season, and they're very enjoyable and informative. I figure they can't influence you too much if you've already written your recaps. Here's episode 1: http://cleolinda.livejournal.com/1040206.html Enjoy!

omg my advisor swears my Strunk and White and is ALWAYS correcting our split infinitives. It's so annoying! Our language is changing, dude! Get over it!

Also, yes to all of the above. Not so much spiders, but definitely the existential dread parts.

Brutal, excellent comparison. I remember reading Roll of Thunder pretty early, but nothing about the details, and never re-read it. No wonder; it probably broke my poor child brain. I'll have to revisit it. It was heartbreaking to realize that To Kill A Mockingbird isn't as progressive as I remember it being in high school (the Black experience from a white family's POV- eeeeh), but it definitely had an impact on how I thought of things. It's hard to learn about how insidious racism is, but so, so important if we are ever to achieve some measure of equality.

Vindicateeed! That makes a lot more sense now. And it is better for the characters, but you can definitely see the seams a bit where she rewrote the story.

To be honest, some of those are plugs for things I discovered in early adult(sort of) hood. Not even high fantasy, but just good stuff.

AHHHHH And I completely forgot about Robin McKinley! HOW HOW HOW. Hero and the Crown and The Blue Sword are both great, although I think I liked Hero and the Crown better, which is weird because it's published after the Blue Sword and is a prequel, but whatever. More medieval stuff, and from different countries/current country analogs than Europe.

I also thoroughly enjoyed her Outlaws of Sherwood, which I think is mostly from Robin's POV, but fleshes Maid Marian out really well. Her Beauty and the beast adaptations are great too- Beauty, and Rose Daughter. Ooooh and Sunshine is one of her slightly more adult books, and is a great creative vampire story.

Upping for McKinley, although I think I liked Hero and the Crown more.

Oh forgot- have you potentially read the Wrinkle in Time series by Madeleine L'Engle? They are closer to sci-fi than fantasy, but they are so amazing. Definitely one of my formative book series.

God, Dealing with Dragons is THE BEST. I read that series silly as a kid. Also Ella Enchanted. It's interesting that this is happening around the same time as Mark Reads is doing it, although not surprising since he's been at it for a while.
