I've been counter-offering invites from one "friend" by always being busy the day of the party but willing to catch up another time over coffee. She is much less interested in coffee than getting another warm body to attend her damn parties.

That smug superiority over small talk drives me crazy. Yes, I would also rather talk about super deep books or whatever, but that is not a great way to break the ice in the grocery line. Sometimes you need the weather to get to the other stuff!
