It wasn't actively stated before "Canterlot Wedding" one way or the other; I don't mind that two-parter and season 3 effectively giving us an answer in that sense, since it was for a specific story purpose.

I like this one a touch better than Digi's (though both are good). I had no interest in the characters of Vinyl or Octavia before encountering the one-two punch of "University Days" and "The Vinyl Scratch Tapes". My appreciation for Gilda dramatically increased with "Dash Academy", and for the Cakes with "Slice of Pony Life". The ponies are colorful and creative, but I only grow to love them when I know about their histories.
