I can't even...brilliant.
Now I'm trawling the corners of my brain as to who else would appreciate this...

I've thought about this point too: could these public figures explicitly address a white, uneducated audience? I'm just unsure (1) how a journalist could make this a premise of their article (2) how even explicitly addressing a white audience, a public figure could still avoid appropriation.

I think this is one of most interesting comments on Ms. Metz's article so far--the tensions of those "allies" in the public eye, and the dual problems of silence and "bad allying" as sides of the same coin (for example, from http://thefeministwire.com/2013/07/were-not-raisi.... Situated in my perspective, I think the best we can hope for is sustained dialogue with some fuckups, and hopefully some learning. I found this article particularly useful in thinking about the white silence and white allies: http://theangryblackwoman.com/2009/10/01/the-dos-...

Not to out myself, but I teach in higher education in a field closely related to the content of this article. In my professional life, I'm particularly interested in positive political projects: helping students aquire new tools (alongside the tools they may already have) in which to encounter and challenge social structures in their world. They often make mistakes, I often make mistakes. I'm cringing when I read that folks read this article, and then want to shut up. Listen, learn, speak; make mistakes, do better. It's a long game, rather than a short one.

On episode 3 and it's all I can do to not sit myself down for the next 24 hours and finish the rest of the season!

In re: #4: How sad is it that I am surprised to watch a show that treats a trans story with sensitivity--I was ready to cringe and feel disappointed, and was fairly impressed instead.

I CANNOT wait for the L.I. Wilder piece: Rose Wilder, ghostwriting, and libertarianism! Well done--this was great.
