Guys, this is a side-note but I am in some Toastie trouble: anyone know where I can get hold of Texts from Jane Eyre in the UK? It was top of my Christmas list and Amazon only has one used copy, so it's not stocking it (yet?). I will buy it if I have to, but is anyone supplying it properly? Mallory, do you happen to know?

I don't know what to say. I feel devastated. But to paraphrase what someone said on Twitter earlier today, I might be devastated but I have the privilege of not being afraid. I don't have to have a talk with my sons about how best to act around a police officer. Because I am white.

The fact that this is true is so grotesque I don't have the words. I'm glad to hear about donating to the public library in Ferguson because I literally don't know what else to do.

This series is gorgeous. It's my absolute favourite on The Toast, and it has some serious competition (dirtbags! Monks! Women in Art History!).
I want to print them all out and put them on my wall. Thank you, Marika, for writing them.

I arrived home with heavy grocery bags. Went in the kitchen and suddenly a stray cat leaped through the window. Hurriedly put both the shopping and my handbag on the oven top, and knocked one of the electric burner switches without realising it.

Spent several minutes luring a people-hating cat out from underneath my bed, and came back to a melted handbag. It was plastic-pretending-to-be-leather. Like a scene from a farce, isn't it?

I tell ye what, you haven't lived until you've tried to scrub a handbag off your landlady's oven top in order to save your deposit :)
