most people really don't want handouts. It lowers their self respect. the trick is finding the ones who really CANT work (because of mental or physical disabliites) and limit the welfare to them.also for single women who have to chose between a job and childcare childcare should be available on the work site,so these women can work, and the children are easily assessable in case they get sick.

I agree with you about reading Audacity of Hope" I read it last year before I got involved with the campaign.Later I read"Dreams from my Father" which I liked even better because it is Obama's autobiography. It shows the struggles he had for his own identity being of mixed race, and how he went through an angry rebellious period in his adolescent life.Later, after law school he finally knew he had to go to Kenya and find his roots. This quest was both exhillarating and painful for him.But he came through the other side. This is why,I believe, he holds such strong vision and ideals. Until one has struggled with ones own issues(as someone said on this thread but I cant find the post)and has accepted who they are, both strengths and weaknesses, one cannot move on toward empathy with others.I really identified with this struggle Obama had because I had one too,but later, when I was in my thirties..Addiction.depression,healing from an abusive childhood, finding my talents that I had to give, becoming my own person, and finally,at age 64,releasing old resentments and fears, then, and only then was I finlally able to really reach out to others with love. This to me is where empathy starts, and then it flows outward, like ripples in a pond.so those of you who are angry or depressed and struggling, dont give up the fight.there is a better life once you come through it.And then you can follow Obama's vision of hope with your whole heart and soul, without the bondage of past baggage! And this holds true regardless of what your cause is. AS someone said"insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results" Lets hope our new government learns from history and works toward reversing the war mentality and moving toward world peace!
