The GOP is not even close to what the party was 20 years ago. Tea Party and billionaire influence have transmogrified the once intellectual, civilized party into a segmented beast that is unlikely to unify and work as one group. Tea Party foamers are living in an echo chamber and think the cacophony is the voice of majority, when in fact it is the rah rah team hearing their own cheers. Fear of tea party mutiny has cowed many Republicans who are fearful for their own fate, within their own party.

Boehner has been trying to meld the renegades and the moderates with intent to actually represent their electorate. But to the far right, that has been viewed as heresy , as they somehow believe they can---with the modest following they now seem to have--run the entire government by hook and by crook. They care less about the nation than they do about their own political points of view. They constantly like to trot out the words "patriot" and "constitution" as if that lends them some special kind of purpose. If the Pope is speaking truths that violate the far right's sense of purpose, then they reject the Pontiff. If the majority of voters disagree with the main thrust of tea party dogma, that makes no difference. They, after all, have been endowed by some kind of magical secret force with the purpose and crafty means of achieving what they want to. The hell with everybody else!
