"the U.S. health-care system"? That's no system. It is a Rube Goldberg machine for creating chaos and inequities and absurdities that would be farcical if they weren't so very often tragic.

I think Cohen is confined to a wheelchair. I don't know how long that has been the case, but if he was wheelchair-bound back then, that limitation (especially in the years before OSHA) may be part of the reason for his seeming laziness then. Wouldn't of course excuse his racism and very strange thinking.

Because the enemy of my enemy might be my friend (or at least advocate), [except of course in a political universe seemingly almost entirely populated by people totally unlike Don Quixote or Jesus or Buddha or Mohammed or Chuang Tzu]. It just occurs to me that, if we exclude Dick Cheney and Antonin Scalia, we have a real shortage of moral monsters in the second decade of the twenty-first century. Wait, I was forgetting any number of understudies for the category, who are mercifully kept away from real power by the common sense of democratic voters.

On the other hand, I'm sure he'd prefer not getting the kind of treatment Bradley Manning has suffered. So, he tried to forestall that, underestimating the wrath and reach of the powers that be (and their toadies, whose name is legion, it turns out).

I'm about 200% certain that you have it wrong. She is some significant fraction of Cherokee, on her mother's side, I think. The Republicans tried to smear her with the accusation that she traded on her Native American ancestry to get preferential treatment, which she did not do.
