I have never thought of that series when I'm trying to think of books with queer characters -- probably because Tom and Carl's relationship is completely normal to everyone in the book. Thank you for the reminder!

Mendota disappeared from Kansas, but the distributor has a pretty specific Minnesota coverage map, it looks like!

Mostly not flavored for me (with the exception of Clearly Canadian, gone but not forgotten). My midwestern fizzy water habit started early, though, and resulted in my parents buying cases of Mendota Springs (which I preferred to La Croix) until my boyfriend won the gift-giving contest with a very early SodaStream.

As a kid I got to buy one Clearly Canadian a day on road trips (always blackberry) and I have never stopped looking for it in gas stations even though I haven't seen it in years. It was the best.

Vorkosigan books are my most frequent comfort reads, although I'll drop in at various points in the series -- mostly Warrior's Apprentice, Vor Game, Cetaganda, Memory, and A Civil Campaign. So good, every time.

I love and adore Sabriel, but somehow come back to Lirael more often -- a library full of magic, a girl isolated by systems that don't account for her presence (I guess I'm mostly there for the Clayr stuff)...

And to advertise it! She's the best. I'm not quite sure what I think about her and Telemain from an adult perspective...

Spindle's End was another of my absolute favorites, and I feel like so few people have come across it! I could only read Chalice from a certain mindset, but Shadows was much more like Spindle's End, although a completely different world. I hope you love it :-)

Oh, along the lines of trails, and also walkable from Rosslyn -- Roosevelt Island is a fun place to wander in good weather and has very few tourists, and is also fun to kayak/SUP around. There's a good rental place just under the Key Bridge (http://www.boatingindc.com/key-bridge-boathouse).

NK Jemisin is wonderful! Her Hundred Thousand Kingdoms series is also a bit more playful.
