Starlight Glimmer is such an awesome villain---she's smart, devious, and extremely talented. She figured out how to alter Starswirl's time traveling spell to her own benefit while predicted pretty much every attempt Twilight made to stop her. I particularly enjoyed seeing Starlight lecture young Hoops and Dumb-bell on teasing Fluttershy, leaving Twilight in the awkward situation of wanting to encourage the bullying to happen anyway.
"In a world where everypony is unique, some are bound to feel more special than others. But that isn't a license to be cruel, is it?" Starlight's equalist propaganda is always so quotable. The following scene with creepy-adult Twilight and filly Rainbow Dash was even more hilarious: http://i.imgur.com/PirXeeM.jpg
It was also nice to see a glimpse of a present dominated by Queen Chrysalis and her changeling army, and Nightmare Moon having banished Celestia to the moon, but their evil reign seemed much less terrifying to me compared to Sombra's war.
I suppose having Starlight Glimmer's redemption wasn't too hard to anticipate. It's a straightforward, formulaic way to demonstrate that "friendship is magic". I just feel it happened a bit too sudden. Starlight seemed incredibly bitter about her past and exceedingly determined to exact her revenge against Twilight.
That said, the quick turnaround isn't too unreasonable: Starlight must have realized her actions had unimaginable consequences the she didn't intend. She certainly didn't plan on destroying Equestria. On the contrary, Our Town was supposedto be a vision of a utopian society, a "sanctuary of equality" free of prejudice against the less talented---a better Equestria, not a ruined one.
It's pretty incredible that Starlight doesn't receive any punishment for casting such a dangerously powerful spell. Somewhat ironically, Starlight gets special treatment despite the potential destruction she would've wrought because she had displayed an exceptional aptitude in magic. It would've been a waste to just get rid of her, a bit like when Goku didn’t want Krillin to kill Vegeta.
No matter how you feel about Starlight's redemption, it's hard not to feel a bit emotional about those final couple of minutes. Perhaps it's just me, since these finales always feel like a tender good-bye and I'm absolutely terrible at those.
It's been a wonderful season but I probably still like Seasons 2 and 4 a bit more, just because those still have more of my favorite episodes. And now, the long, long wait begins.

If only real conflicts could be resolved so simply. Feuds where projectiles are being thrown around tend to be awfully violent and more complicated than it seems. That's the thing with this moral, we kinda know that the true victims of conflicts are the innocent bystanders, but that makes them no less easier to resolve.
Still it was a good measure of fun, especially with the interaction between Twilight and Fluttershy. Not as strong as other duos we've seen but they have a pretty solid dialogue that makes up for it. Plus, I am always a sucker for any quantum physics references, which is happily now part of the canon. C'mon cutie map, make them ponies solve some quantum physics problems!
Apparently, circle with squiggly line + heart - Pinkie-Dash-Rarity cutie mark benzene ring = friendship hug raised to the (cupcake x pie/cake). Also, [some expression with a sinusoidal wave, Fluttershy and Twilight's cutie mark and a smile] + Applejack's cutie mark/book x (gifts / infinity) = 2 happy friends: http://i.imgur.com/Dp8yi9j.jpg

While I probably wouldn't go so far as to use scientific research as an excuse to rehash the experience, I perfectly understand the sentiment of wanting to be included. Especially when you miss out on those funny moments where you had to be there to enjoy it. Twilight's reaction captures rather accurately the emotional turmoil and regret one might get in those circumstances. Even so, Twilight trying to persuade her friends to drink a potion for dispelling Discord's magic was still quite cringe-worthy for me. I think I just don't like seeing people embarrass themselves unnecessarily; like when I watch comedy films where this is about to happen, I have to look away.
Anyway, it was nice to see Discord actually teaching Twilight a thing or two about friendship, even if it wasn't the intention. I actually would have been pleased if Discord actually set out to help Twilight learn a valuable friendship lesson, knowing fully well that he can have his naughty bit of fun along the way.
Instead, Discord overplays his hand and lets it slip that he had purposely encouraged the others to exclude Twilight in the weekend shenanigans, and that Twilight becoming jealous because of it was just a happy side effect. Alas, he got a taste of his own medicine. I suppose that's more in line with mischievous nature, although this kind of stuff makes me think Discord is a lot less reformed than he seems. And of course, that's not necessarily bad thing.
Still, I am left a little curious about what exactly happened in that long weekend, but I guess we won't really know.

It's quite charming that Pinkie Pie thinks what her family does for Heart's Warming is the same as everypony else's even though their rituals are clearly different from conventional ones. I'm not being a purist on traditions like Applejack, but double baked pot pie and rock soup are hardly "po-tay-to po-tah-to". And I'm still not sure how the Apples managed to finish their soup.
Pinkie's family members all resemble some stereotype we are familiar with, which would make you think they're quite normal. But then again, some of those stereotypes aren't usually considered ordinary or typical. It makes me think that on her social skills alone, Pinkie Pie is the most average of them all.
That said, I really love the Pie family, they're quite the amusing bunch, with their quirks and oddities:
- Maud is the same sweet, adorable, stone-faced rock aficionado, although her holiday carol at the end was a bit rocky compared to her earlier work.
- Iggy and Big Mama Q are the formal-speaking, always-serious-looking parents to four lovely daughters. They seem quite alright, if a bit un-fun.
- Limestone Pie is the abrasive eldest daughter, de facto in charge of the Pie rock farm, and protector of Holder's Bolder, that egg-shaped rock found in a dragon's nest. Bit of a grumpy loudmouth but seems fair-minded when it matters.
- And Marble Pie is the taciturn youngest daughter and only-by-minutes baby sister of Pinkie. Quite the bashful cutie. Mmm hmm.
I'm sure all the blushing between Big Mac and Marble Pie is just the embarrassment between two shy ponies who are unsure of how to speak to each other. It's highly unlikely to mean anything more but I suppose it's not inconceivable that it's not entirely outside the realm of possibility. Some people get overly invested in their pairings but I think it's mostly harmless fun so if that's your thing, by all means, let those ships sail.
Applejack may have been rather impudent and presumptuous but I believe she was sincere about simply wanting to share the Apple holiday traditions. Of course, as a guest of the Pies, it was discourteous of her to make that decision on her own, and as she herself realized, she was being inconsiderate to the Pies's traditions. Still, all's well that ends well.
Hearthbreakers wasn't the most hilarious or exciting of episodes but I enjoyed every single heartwarming minute of it. I hope we will see the wacky Pie family again and sooner rather than later.

That said, it was still quite enjoyable, and not at all badly written given how the second half of the episode develops. Some character development for Princess Cadence and Shining Armor is always welcome. I'm a little curious as to the timeframe when the baby was made (not that they'd ever bring that up) and more curious about what kind of pony the baby will be (unicorn if I had to bet).
I definitely enjoyed Shining Armor's nerdgasm and Pinkie's wacky waving inflatable tube pony flailing but this is my favorite moment: http://i.imgur.com/ckRNdTV.jpg
