I can understand why you might initially react that way. Unfortunately, the narrative of the assault, posted on this site and published in the Post, suggests that it was a racially motivated attack. The account in DCist makes it clear that the attacker was mentally disturbed (http://dcist.com/2012/04/metrorail_assault_victim_says_trans.php).

Great post...I hope basketball fans will be able to see some of the info gathered by Stats, LLC regularly, in the way that baseball fans can access PITCH f/x data.

Also, since "we're talking about practice" was there any discussion of or skepticism about how far practice can actually take a player? This seems especially relevant when considering free throw capability in the NBA which isn't that great.

Thanks for this comment. I too grew up hearing the "depressing screed" and constant admonitions to "represent for the race." It is a bit of a double-edged sword, no? You can buy into (as I think I have) and accomplish great things, but when things don't work out (even though we know that life isn't a meritocracy), it can create tremendous self-doubt.

"Making Whiteness" is a great book. I prefer Noel Ignatiev's "How the Irish Became White," because it examines whiteness in areas other than the South.

This is a fascinating account. Do you know how they noticed the cheat in the end?

Thanks for this review. I just watched three episodes back to back so while it is fresh in my mind:

You are totally making me rethink Jennifer Beals performance. I had been reading her awkward performance as a deliberate statement of the superintendent's inability to really connect with the rank and file. In other words, her heart might be in the right place, but she doesn't necessarily know how to go about cleaning up the department and city administration. This explains her reliance on Jarek, who in contrast seems much, much more appealing. Didn't he say something to her like "you are always telling people to leave" ?

I really like the scenes between Jarek and his partner Caleb (from FNL) and I find myself mostly rooting for them.

Finally, you are dead on with the "Goodfellas" comparison. Maybe the writers are paying homage to it? It seems especially evident in the scene when Liam, the undercover cop witnesses the beating. And also, haven't they used some of the same music?

Jennifer Lawrence DID look amazing. I like how she managed to look sexy in a relatively simple dress...Meanwhile, Halle Berry managed to look hot and boring at the same time.

All good storylines, also excited to see what happens with Carmelo Anthony, JR Smith, Devin Harris as the trade deadline approaches.
