Me too - I'm sick of having religion being given legitimacy by being regularly given a platform for delivering their warped views on reality on what should be factual shows.

I think we "cats" (as in, "organising atheists is like herding cats") should fight back - maybe by having a website with a standard email of complaint that we could adopt or modify and send instantly to the offending media.

Isn't the atheist blogoshere is subject to natural selection with the most reliable, topical and well written becoming the most popular hubs for the exchange of views? Personally, I'd like to see atheists organising ourselves to speak with the authority of numbers to counteract the influence of religion in what should be secular concerns.
I'm grateful for all the great work I see by those like yourself who continue to publicise an atheist viewpoint in a rational and assertive voice.

When I look at the things that happen in the world I can only conclude that Sharron Angle believes in one seriously deranged and totally fucked-up god (among many). What words of comfort do you think she would be able to offer a victim of torture or the wretched survivor of a pogrom, or the St Orleans flooding ... "you are fortunate, god has special plans for you"??

@ChristopherTK - You are right, in reality this is what tends to happen. But that is because the current situation puts you in the wrong: you either have to endure being abused, victimised and scapegoated and become a victim of the current system OR you finally crack and "push back" with the result that you are seen as the perpetrator (after all, by the freedom of speech arguement, the Phelps et al were doing nothing wrong!!) and you are again a victim of the current system.

Its a lose-lose situation which supports the propagation and dissemination of bigotry, discrimination and hate.

Surely we can't accept the "law of the jungle" with citizens feeling obliged to take the law into their own hands when pushed too far? Or are they simply collateral damage for the Greater Good of freedom to say and shout and demonstrate and harangue and incite about whatever vile, perverted, prejudice and slander one damn well pleases? Just asking ...

Sad news - his is a voice that should not be silenced.

As a tribute to Hitch's work I hope that many more atheists come forward to speak publicly, fulfill as many cancelled engagements as possible and assist in opposing the pope's visit to GB this September.

Sincere wishes for a speedy recovery.

@Baconsbud - But there were the crusades, the inquisition, witch trials, Jimmy Jones, suicide bombers, paedophile priests etc, etc you would not call those good things and people are still not rethinking their religious views!

How would you "not tolerate heckling from one of these morons at a funeral" you were attending?

Why should they be allowed to behave in a way that is so offensive to common decency that you are driven to comit a crime? You would then be in the wrong and they would be seen as the victims!! This is all absurd.

The price of our freedom comes with the responsibility to respect each other. The Phelps family behaviour shows no respect and, I contend, should be illegal.

the "thin end of the wedge" argument concerns me. I know why it is used but it suggests that if we make a rational decision for good motives now, we will somehow lose the ability to make sensible decisions in the future .... and we'll all "go to hell in a handcart"!! This is not logical, it makes no sense - yet it gets trotted out time after time as an excuse to avoid taking action.

I view the "I disagree with you but defend your right to say x, y and z" sentiment in the same way. They can think what they want, but once said these thoughts may be incitments to hatred and violence and should not be tolerated. Am I wrong?

exbrit69 - funerals are not for the deceased, they are for the living and although you wouldn't be affected by what happened (or didn't happen) at your funeral, those who grieve your loss will have a need to mark your passing. That deserves respect:; with some time and space and ceremony or ritual which those who survive you find meaningful. There doesn't have to be anything religious about this, but I feel that an honouring of your memory is important, after all we love and are loved during life and those emotions cannot simply be discarded abruptly when a loved one dies.
