I agree that including the sex scenes was subversive, but I felt like they veered into male gazey territory, particularly the scissoring. I also go back and forth on whether the last scene was gratuitous. I liked that they used the beads for themselves, but am maybe weirdly hung up on the symmetrical composition of that shot? It felt objectifying to me because the framing interrupts a relatively naturalistic sequence, but this was more a gut reaction. YMMV, of course! I admit I harbored preexisting distaste for way the director films sex scenes to this from Oldboy.

I turned in my master's thesis! I still can't muster up more enthusiasm for how it went other than "well it's finished." I have no idea how I will overcome all the cringe to rewrite and polish it for applications, but I still have exams that I feel woefully underprepared for before I get to worry about that. The thing with exams though is that I took off time between undergrad and this degree, and it turns out that I neither really remember how to write exam essays nor do I have the patience for jumping through hoops anymore.

I did read a really great webcomic today called 14 Nights by Kristina Stipetic. It's about the relationship between a sex-averse man and a Russian lab technician who lost his hand, and their insecurities and emotions are beautifully depicted.

I watched The Handmaiden a few weeks ago and loved it! I had qualms about how some of the sex scenes were filmed, but enjoyed everything else enough that it didn't matter that much.

Good luck with your final! I am also trapped in exam season hell so have all the sympathy!

I have the basic problem that when I'm around people I know I feel obligated not to change so I'm broadly incapable of growing as a person unless I'm sufficiently alone.

Hard same. This is why I left the country, not that that's overdoing it or anything.

I think I will do that as well. It can be a prophecy he sees everywhere he turns. I want it to haunt his dreams so that he'll lie awake, restless, and anxious at night like everyone he & his buddies have fucked over.
