While I agree that this pastor is a jackass, I am fully against censorship. The media is ultimately I believe more responsible for this because if they hadn't spread the word to every outlet, none of us would even know about this. I wholly disagree that he is being held responsible for deaths of others, when he is not pulling the trigger. Yes this man is hateful, but they've been letting the Aryan Nation exist for a very long time here and no one seems to be stopping them. It seems interesting to me that these days everyone is ready to shut everyone up instead of defend our freedom of speech and freedom of religion. In the darkest of times is when we need to be most passionate about protecting what makes us so lucky to be Americans - the right to say and believe in anything, even if others don't like it.
good stuff to know, i'll be visiting for 2 weeks on thanksgiving, you know, that holiday in late november :))))
however i love mexican coca cola way better than the artificial stuff here!!
SHAME ON KATU FOR GLORIFYING THE CIRCUS!!! It is sick and twisted torture of animals starting with beating, hog-tying, and electrocuting animals since infancy in order to make them do 'tricks' to entertain people who obviously think that torture for human consumption is no big deal, or choose to wear blinders themselves. Making Asian Elephants walk from the train station to the coliseum is even more disgusting. People please wake up and do NOT support circuses - and if you know someone who wants to take their kid? Do what you gotta do to change their mind.
You are not being a killjoy - you are defending animals that unfortunately no one seems to have the balls to protect in this country.
Might want to get the facts straight. Ryderwood does not ban children from entering city limits, just requires you be 55 to live there. I went there all the time as a kid to visit my grandparents.
Did you not think these 'adorable sweet kids' would get older? Teenagers have been a pain in the arse since the beginning of time - it's too bad the world doesn't see itself as equally responsible for looking after them as they do the younger ones. Just because they have more attitude and test us more, doesn't mean they don't need intelligent, mature individuals to live by example around them. *especially* in this day and age.
My grandparents lived in Ryderwood when I was a kid and it was a great, quiet, safe place for a kid to go visit. My sister and I would walk with my grandpa to the one general store where we could buy ice cream, go to the library where there was no librarian (just borrow a book and bring it back), and walk down to the beautiful duck pond. As a little kid I never had to worry about anything, and I think my parents loved that - especially since my other grandparents lived in North Portland where, in the early 1980's, my grandma was mugged walking to the grocery store and I was chased in Peninsula Park by a creepy man. There is something to be said about communities like Ryderwood for our elderly citizens to retire. (Of course, when I was a kid, 55 sounded old, now in my 30's with people in their 50's at my office, it doesn't seem so elderly!).
I do understand the concerns about legalities, but hope there is a way to preserve Ryderwood and the intentional community that they have created. To this day I remember it as one of the most peaceful, quiet, friendly places I've ever spent time in. Funny they talk about being 'run over by bicycles' - we rode bikes there and enjoyed being kids there - it's not like there's a 'no kids allowed' sign, you just can't live there if you're under 55.
