There has been some concern regarding a few posts about a backhanded attempt by the IRS to register guns. It would supposedly require us to list all guns we own on our 2009 tax forms. just wanted to put your minds at ease...it is bogus. according to factcheck.org:
There is no such bill. A chain e-mail containing bogus claims refers to a bill that died more than eight years ago.
S. 2099 (not "SB" 2099) was introduced Feb. 24, 2000, by Democratic Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island. He called it the "Handgun Safety and Registration Act of 2000," and as the title implies it would have applied only to handguns, not to "all guns you have or own."
It's true that the bill would have required owners of handguns to register them with the federal government within one year, under the 1934 National Firearms Act
Well, actionnottalk, I am doing what I can. I am emailing legislators Every day, I am calling my representatives, I intend to participate in a july 4th tea party. I am also researching issues that concern me and my family and educating myself on the Constitution and principles this country was founded on. I open discussions on politics with people daily and discuss both sides of issues and encourage them to get involved and make their voices heard. I do not believe that the celebrities you mentioned are simply out to get rich. I believe they are speaking up for their beliefs and using their "celebrity" to spread the word and encourage everyone to do their part and get involved in whatever way they can. Negativity is not helpful and not a way to lead. I think this site is a wonderful place for people to begin discussing the issues and forming their opinions so that they feel more informed and more comfortable raising discussions in their personal lives.
I am very concerned that the fire that was burning strong in April is dimming now. Everyone was fired up and excited about the upcoming TaxDay Teaparties. Our Nation's Independence Day is rapidly approaching, but it seems like folks are ready to accept defeat and settle into the background again.
PLEASE don't let that happen!!! Stand Up, Raise your voice again. Let's make the July 4th TEA Parties bigger than anyone could imagine. Get involved in planning, etc. or at least make sure you show up to be counted. Our children and grandchildren are counting on us....don't let them down!
I am also Mad as Hell at our government, but on tax day, I was one of those smiling. I was truly happy to be surrounded by people who think like me and share my concerns. I was also Happy that, as Americans, we can peacefully assemble and have our voices heard. I understand your anger, but you do not help the cause by wearing it on your shirtsleeve. I refuse to wipe the smile off my face because I now know that I am not alone! This country is a wonderful nation and I intend to do my best to keep it that way and stop its current erosion, but I will do my part by wearing my smile, gathering peacefully with like-minded citizens and making sure that all those in our government know that I am here and that I am not going anywhere until they start to do what they are supposed to. So, find your smile and let them know that you will be in their face until things turn around!
I have been reading a lot about ethanol lately....it is being promoted in Iowa and Illinois as the patriotic way to save the farmers.....none of these campaigns mention how much it has been responsible for causing our food prices to soar! I think that is terribly irresponsible. Farmers are choosing to plant crops for ethanol and soy biodiesel because they are government subsidized crops and they are guaranteed a higher return than their normal food crops. This means fewer fields are being utilized to feed us and the prices of the food crops are skyrocketing as well. It has been proven that ethanol does not yield any more mpgs than regular gasoline and is harder on engines. This whole boondoggle is NOT good for AMERICA!
From what I have been reading here, many of you are as fed up as I am with this two party system which lends itself to party-line voting and also inspires citizens to vote based on which party they think they believe in. I have written many emails to the commission on presidential debates and other outlets that are responsible for deciding who gets to participate in the debates. Without gaining access to participate in these debates, no third party will ever stand a chance in a national election. Everyone needs to email them and hound them until they make the requirements more realistic for some of the other parties out there. Please let them know that you want this venue opened up to more parties.
I do keep a loaded gun in my home. It is in a safe which is easy for my husband or me to access quickly. A gun does no good for protection if it doesn't have bullets in it!
howie, healthcare costs would not be so high if those who are relying on taxpayers to provide for them didn't use emergency rooms for everything! at least in illinois, if you are on medicaid, you have to pay $5.00 for a doctor's office visit, but the emergency room is free.
On the other side of the coin, a friend of mine was recently in an accident in Canada. The care he recieved in their socialized system was far from what you would expect in any modern society! He ended up being admitted to the first US hospital he could get to because the Canadian hospital had released him with a handful of ibuprofen when he had massive internal injuries! He spent 5 hours on a gurney in a ward with over 50 other people. A nurse came to examine him and told him he had some pretty bad bruises. Then the doctor came over, spoke to the nurse and signed the release form. I don't know about you, but I expect better care than that in this day and age. Socialized healthcare doesn't work!
elcolorao31, i am very much saddened to hear that you think the path we are on is a good one! First of all, I would like to say that what we had under Bush was FAR from conservatism!!! Your "ideas" are bankrupting this country. You cannot Spend your way OUT of debt, all that does is dig a BIGGER HOLE to climb out of. But it won't be you clawing your way out of it, it will be my children and grandchildren. True conservatism is what I want....values based on the Constitution...everyone standing on their own two feet rather than on the backs of those who are working hard and being financially responsible. When You have grown up and become responsible for your own family, I hope that you will see the error of your current ideas. Hopefully, we will have turned them around by then and actually be on our way to the Nation our forefathers fought so hard to create for us. Good luck.
I don't see Davenport Iowa on the map....is there still one planned for the 15th at the capital?
