Exactly. Dog's journals are basically memory practices. In the last book, Beka made numerous references that she would compare her journal and the official reports.

It's so strange to hear MY name. Thank you, Mark, for keeping us entertained. Watching you is the closest I can get to reading the book again for the first time.

Also, I had a serious realization about Farmer, but since it involves the Circle of Magic books, I'll rot13 it.

Also, I am very happy to have commissioned the chapter where both Farmer and Beka are so very impressive. Beka has changed a lot from just Bloodhound. And watching Farmer playact and brighten whenever Beka appears is delightful.

You use female pronouns for Okha. That tells me all I need to know.

I think sexuality and gender identity would be different in a medieval society. It seems to me that you chose to adapt the identity to the setting rather than the setting to the identity while still maintaining a close enough match that we can recognize it. And that makes sense to me. Tortall's sociology is different than our own, with recognizable present gods and magic and a different government system. There's a lack of an easy-access information source in comparison to us, there isn't a national education system (Not until Thayet anyway). All of these things would change how gender identity is perceived, even by those who have the identity. Like Okha said, there's many like her who probably have no idea what they are. And in a perspective within this universe, even if it was third person rather than Beka's first, you couldn't explain all that without leaving the world.

I'm not trans, however. So all I can do is acknowledge this. I'm not really qualified to judge whether keeping true to the setting and adapting the identity is a good thing or not.

I would be very interested in reading what a trans person thinks about how the sociology of Tortall would influence gender identity though.

Someday I will have decent noodles. Someday I will visit a ramen shop. Until then, I can be jealous over Beka and Goodwin slurping down Yamani buckwheat noodles.

I never liked Pearl. Even reading with a feminist mindset, I don't like her. Someone who paid a mage to turn her teeth into pearls will never get my respect, I don't care how dangerous she is. I mean, she's obviously got some cunning to be able to stay alive so long, but still. She gets by on intimidation alone. Not smarts. Okay, a few things.
1) Now that we have decided that Pounce and Faithful are one in the same, i get to smile and admit that Faithful was never Faithful to me. He was always Pounce. (Juvpu vf jul jura Nynaan naq ure sevraqf jrer qrpvqvat jung gb pnyy uvz, V qebccrq gur obbx jura bar bs gurz fhttrfgrq Cbhapr.)
2) I want to learn how Tunstall did that too, Beka. Sadly, neither of us are as tall as Tunstall (and I'm even shorter than you.)

I don't think there's free education in the Lower City. I distinctly remember free public education being one of Jon/Thayet's new things they wanted to do that was so widely contested.
