I realize that I have said nothing of substance or value to add to the conversation. Honestly, I don't have time to elaborate because I need to clean my house and mow the yard before I catch a plane to Oklahoma. This is my excuse, and I'm sticking to it!

Your tone and rhetoric are not helpful. Although I agree with you that McLaren is mostly propagating an old liberal theology which in a large part is heretical, I do not think your tone was helpful. Largely, Brian McLaren's tone is what has a lot of people running to him. He's genuinely kind, thoughtful, and loving.
Now, I realize you can make the argument (and I would) that loving someone out of a spirit of openness like this whole Ramadan fast thing he's doing is really not love at all. It's misguided at best and in effect will support (no matter what BC says to the contrary) a view of the world that will ultimately damn his friend. If he really loved his fasting, meditating friend, he would share the imperatives that Jesus shared, namely to repent and believe that He is the only one sent from the Father for men to be saved.
And to stand up for you (Nelson) a bit, I don't think you're perverting the message, but maybe more the tone of the message. The fact that Jesus spoke harsh things about families being split and burned up like chaff and some being children of the devil does not give license to be unnecessarily harsh in tone.

I completely agree that Americans don't have a very sound view of the "Kingdom of God." But, again, it always comes down to how one defines it and what purpose, role, and places it fits into.
I feel like I just read a politicians watered down take on some things... basically didn't really say anything of substance.
Honestly, I'm not trying to be a cynic. I re-read his answers but can find no relief!

8 “And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: ‘The words of the first and the last, who died and came to life. 9 “‘I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich) and the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. 10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life. 11 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death.’

Let's say a certain group of professors sign an a statement of beliefs to teach at a school. Let's say that one of the professors states that surely you don't mean we have to literally interpret the beliefs but can believe them metaphorically. Then the boss says, "You're fired." The professor comes back and says, "You can't fire me! I have a contract!" The boss replies, "Well your contract was metaphorical in nature and I'm interpreting differently."
If your view of language is indeterminate than you can never say anything is capital "t" True. And this is the great problem with an indeterminate, everything-goes Biblical hermeneutic. We must interpret Scripture with Scripture first, and not by some abstract statements about language and cultural.

I can't really prove this statement because I'm basically restating what my goody buddy Justin Cowan said. He's the smart guy I know when it comes to more specific examples of this "stalemate" in action.
