An interesting quote from history (as republished recently in the Range magazine of Summer 2009):

"WHEN THE RESOLUTION OF ENSLAVING AMERICA WAS FORMED IN GREAT BRETAIN, THE BRITISH PARLIAMENT WAS ADVISED BY AN ARTFUL MAN WHO WAS GOVERNOR OF PENNSYLVANIA, TO DISARM THE PEOPLE; THAT IT WAS THE BEST AND MOST EFFECTUAL WAY TO ENSLAVE THEM; BUT THAT THEY SHOULD NOT DO IT OPENLY, BUT WEAKEN THEM, AND LET THEM SINK GRADUALLY, BY TOTALLY DISUSING AND NEGLECTING THE MILITIA." -- George Mason (1725-1792), speech at the Virginia Ratifying Convention, June 14, 1778.

The core message of the 2nd Amendment is that the responsible citizenry should keep their skill in using military firearms -- which they are guaranteed by the constitution to "keep"/ own and "bear"/ use -- properly honed/ sharpened at all times so that a citizen militia may be organized from them when it becomes necessary to safeguard our hard-earned liberty, civil rights, and freedom (which, for an example, are now being compromised/ trodden at our borders). Swedish citizenry do this today.

I thought y'all would like to read these quotes that were published in the Range magazine, Summer 2009:
