My meds help "normal" feel normal instead of feeling like mildly depressed, but when I get severe episodes of depression, often lasting weeks, they don't even touch it. I am having one of those episodes right now.
I have missed two weeks of school. I am barely able to get out of bed, clean myself, cook for myself. Things are really bleak.
But I'm not suicidal so I don't know what would happen if I went to the hospital. I would hate to go and have them just send me home.

Also the LES and Chinatown are both great but I have less specific recommendations for them: LES - the candy shop on Rivington, the OCC Makeup store, this bar on the corner of Rivington and Ludlow called Spitzer's Corner, Gaia Italian Cafe (so tiny! so cheap! so delicious!). The Laboritorio il Gelato is right across from Katz's and a must eat - they have flavors like pumpkin and sesame seed that taste like the actual thing instead of like the candied version and they are EXCELLENT. Chinatown - if you like Shanghaiese food/soup dumplings, Joe's Shanghai is better but 456 Shanghai is way better and less busy and touristy. The Shisiedo store is great. The streets smell like fish from all the markets but it is fun to explore. I haven't been but Unicorn is supposed to be one of the better pushcart dim sum places around, and the Peking Duck House is SO worth it. Also check out Apotheke (it's a speakeasy so google directions on how to find it if you go) if you're there at night.
If you stay in Midtown, go to Hell's Kitchen to eat. Walk up and down 9th Ave and find every kind of ethnic food you could want + 900 Thai restaurants (the Yum Yum branded ones at 46th St. are passable and cheap, and have $7 cocktails that come with a free appetizer). Southern Hospitality is great for brunch. Tasty Hand Pulled Noodles is excellent, and a spin off of a Chinatown noodle shop. Get the fat wide noodles in a pan fried dish, they are awesome. Empanada Mama and Breeze used to be two of my favorite places but one has been "closed for renovations" indefinitely and one burned down. Hell's Kitchen, the Mexican restaurant/gay bar has good tequila drinks and food. Five Napkin Burger is excellent (get their classic burger with the caramelized onions and rosemary aioli) and your Broadway centered trip is not complete without a huge cookie from Schmackary's. If you venture off 9th and stay in Midtown, foku+ and X'ian Famous Foods are both good.
(I don't even live in New York I just go there a lot, oops).
ETA: if you love Broadway and can afford it, see who/what is going on cabaret wise at 54 Below while you're there. Also Bar Bacon on 9th, where everything has bacon in it.
