Jockaira: It passed.

Hugh: Our gracious host has already done so. My deepest apologies again, Robert!

To make it absolutely clear: *I* am the reason Robert's got the wrong headline up there. Please proceed to pass all beatings my way. I deserve it. :-/

Yeah, that was the sneakiest, most Fairfax-esque thing I've seen in a while.

The Board put a motion up first to stop the ISA expansion project, and a number of Supervisors went on record supporting it, or expressing support for the "ideas" it expressed, so it looked for all intents and purposes like it would pass.

THEY THEN PROCEEDED TO KILL IT ON A 6-4 VOTE.

After I picked my jaw up off the floor, a new motion was introduced which sought to approve the project, and it was passed on the same margins.

Holy cow! I am so sorry for jumping the gun on this one! :(

The Planning Commission is not elected, it is appointed. By the Democrat-dominated Board of Supervisors.

Elections have consequences? Maybe.

For what it's worth, the system was just as skewed back in the 80's, when the BOS was Republican-dominated. Which might mean that there's something else entirely going on here.

Members of the Planning Commission here in Fairfax County are appointed by the County Board of Supervisors for four-year terms.

All,

Long story short: the Commission bent over backwards to accomodate ISA's demands. Anyone who questioned the reasoning behind the expansion was cross-examined in a fairly hostile manner.

I'm waiting for the transcript to be posted on the County website before I start organizing my notes into a more formal recap. You're welcome to read my (extremely rough) live notes over at http://twitter.com/bledbetter if you want. I was not encouraged by the board's reaction, even though there were many absolutely fantastic presentations made by the opposition!

Respectfully,
Brian

The Fairfax board has long given preferential treatment to the ISA, whether Republicans or Democrats. This comes as no surprise.

Some interesting background information - The surrounding area that the Popes Head campus is built on is considered to be a part of the Potomac watershed. As such, there are *severe* restrictions on what homeowners can build on their properties, all of which are intended to protect the environmental state of the River.

Add to that the fact that this is on a winding two-lane, fairly rural road, and I think it's pretty clear that expanding the facilities to accommodate *more* people is a bad idea.

I plan on attending the meeting tonight. It'll be interesting to see how things turn out, but I'll go out on a limb right now and say that based on past performance, ISA will not have any problems whatsoever from the County government.
