He's clearly speaking of people who have less education being able to make an honest living, as he puts it. Nowhere does he allude to more educated people being less honest than less educated people.

I believe that the Colorado Court of Appeals does not have a timeline in which to decide whether or not to accept the appeal. If the appeal is accepted then there are deadlines that must be met for submittals, etc.

Reading with a dictionary at one's side is scarcely a hardship and encourages the expansion of the reader's lexicon.

"...even though the pope has the scientific credentials to understand and appreciate the magnitude of the growing problem."

According to Pope Francis' official Vatican biography, "He graduated as a chemical technician and then chose the path of the priesthood, entering the Diocesan Seminary of Villa Devoto." This hardly sounds like a rigorous scientific education and sounds more akin to an AA degree to qualify one as a chemistry lab technician, something that would hardly give him "scientific credentials" on the order of a Doctorate or other advanced degree in a relevant discipline.

"...and has been sued in desperation by its own community seeking relief from excessive noise?"

Seven plaintiffs is a community in your mind? That's less than 1/10,000 of Longmont's population. Your entire "community" can legally fit in a mini-van. Your "community" could hold its meetings in a child's backyard wading pool. There's a seven-inch aspen seedling in my side yard that has more branches than your "community" phone tree.

Re: Good guys, bad guys

I don't know where you get the idea that the good guys with guns are going to protect you. Personally, even though I own and have been known to legally carry guns, I have absolutely no desire to go out on a limb to protect an adult who has no desire to protect himself. I'm not a cop, I don't have the same legal protections that cops have, I don't have a government that is going to pay my lawyers if or when I get sued for protecting you. As far as I'm concerned, you're on your own while I protect my family and myself, if it ever comes to that.

Re: Train horns

A significant number of crossings in Longmont don't have warning lights or guard arms installed. The wayside horns would not be allowed at those crossings, resulting in only a partial quieting of the train horns. As I recall, New Quiet Zones have additional requirements on which the City would be required to foot the bill.

"We're all facing a sharp learning curve."

Maybe it's not so much that the learning curve is sharp as those doing the learning aren't.

It's inexcusable that two years after the flood, the approval process is still broken and the town officials and staff seem surprised that there's a problem. But on the other hand, I don't have a whole lot of sympathy for Lyons residents, residents who have voted to exclude those lower-income residents who have no place to rebuild.
