GUYS. This isn't about the book, but MARK JUST WON THE SCHNEIDER AWARD FOR TEENS. It's given by the American Library Association to "honor an author or illustrator for a book that embodies an artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences." It's not listed yet (as they're literally announcing all the awards right now), but here's the link about it: http://www.ala.org/awardsgrants/schneider-family-...

I'm watching now (youth librarian) so I'll update if anything else comes up! :D

Man, I've read this before but it's been so long I can barely remember it - so this is completely thrilling to me. I'd forgotten Lu-Tze shows up! It's very hard not to just read ahead...

On a related note, I work at a library and I've got an extra copy of the next book on the list, Gur Jrr Serr Zra. I already own two copies (one paper, one ebook) so I'd like to offer it to someone on the list who needs a copy. It's a paperback American edition (this cover: http://images.paperbackswap.com/l/80/2380/9780060... and I'll send it to you free of charge. Just want to spread the love! Email me at selecasharp @ gmail.com if you're interested. :)

I haven't done any predictions for this before, despite reading it for the very first time... so... I'll try?

1. Dairine and Roshaun will discuss ~feelings~ at some point.
2. Which I guess means I'm predicting Roshaun and the others are sticking around.
3. There will be a war?
4. Ooh, maybe the newly evolved Alaalu can intervene somehow...
5. I'd like it if two aspects of the Lone Power duked it out! The redeemed one vs an earlier spiteful aspect would be super cool...
6. Okay I'm really just listing things I WANT to happen, rather than making predictions...
7. Here's one! Carmela will be AWESOME.
8. And Darryl will come back! And maybe S'reee too.

Also! I still have both a copy of Wizard's Holiday and the next book, Wizards at War, in hardcopy. If anyone would like a copy of Wizard's Holiday for fun, or NEEDS a copy of the next book, let me know and I'll send it/them to you! I'm told they're pretty close to the NME.

I really like Roshaun's 'Because I didn't have to' - it's like, what is sacrifice if it's forced/expected of you? It's not really a true sacrifice anymore (this is making me think of Harry Potter now...). Pretty good character development!

Also, PONCH IS A GOOD DOG.

Also also! I still have both a copy of Wizard's Holiday and the next book, Wizards at War, in hardcopy. If anyone would like a copy of this one for fun, or NEEDS a copy of the next book, let me know and I'll send it/them to you! I'm told they're pretty close to the NME.

Hey! I actually need to read the section still (trying not to read comments is haaaard) but I wanted to offer again - I have donated copies of this book, Wizard's Holiday, and Wizards at War in their original publications. If anyone needs one or both books (I'm told they're pretty similar to the NME), please let me know! I'll mail them out to you. :)

Off to read!

This is my first time reading the series, and though I've been pretty good about keeping pace with Mark, I HAD to read ahead to see what Dairine did. :D Already this book is shaping up to be one of my favorites!

I also have a question/offer - I work in a library and we just got a donation of the (original, pretty sure) copies of this book (Wizard's Holiday) and the next one, Wizards at War. For those who've read both (I'm reading the NME), how different are they from the NME? And if they're not too different, is anyone interested in them? I'm willing to mail them out to anyone who needs a copy.

ETA: I never got two weeks either, but my high school had pretty decent food. Not that I ate it often, though.

It's time to mock "Basilica's" size (and appetite) for a bit. Although, unlike Agnes, no one implies that his weight affects anything else about him, like his worthiness for the stage.

I noticed that too, but I now think that's deliberate on Pratchett's part, pointing out how Basilica and Agnes are treated very differently by the world while being treated similarly by the narrative. It was when the phrase 'It was an education to watch [them do something]' came up again - Agnes had it a few sections back, about turning around, and now it's repeated about watching Basilica eat. Using the exact same phrasing about both of them - a kind of odd phrasing at that - points out the double standard of how they're received, if that makes sense. I can't say for sure it was, of course, but I think so. And that helps a lot, for me.

I just realized I accidentally read the next chapter as well! I was just so engaged I apparently failed to notice the chapter break. I HAVE NEVER DONE THAT, Y'ALL. I think that says something! (I'm reading these for the first time, following along with Mark. OR I WAS.) That said, I loved everything about this and now I am even more determined to go whale watching one of these days.

I totally agree re: bringing up Agnes's weight. I'm a pretty fat woman myself, and I like it for those reasons. But I also actually like that the narration points it out more than once, because readers are so prone to ignoring anything that doesn't fit their mental mold of a character (see all the people who FREAKED OUT that Rue from Hunger Games wasn't white...), so I kind of like that it's reinforced? Like, no, you don't get to decide this awesome character isn't fat because your preconceptions say fat people can't be awesome, if that makes any sense.

Thank goodness that's over. I'm (as many) not a huge fan of Rincewind, and while bits of this are fun, it just kind of... fizzles at the end? And it's just so, bleh, everyone else has already said it better than I could. So glad we're moving on!

On a totally different note, The Wee Free Men ebook is on sale for $1.99 today on Amazon, if anyone wants to snag it now! http://www.amazon.com/Wee-Free-Men-Discworld-Book... (It's book 30, according to this, so there is a character name spoiler if you follow the link!)
