I so wish there was more information regarding how the gun went off. Was it an older gun? I took a gun safety class and was told that a gun won't go off if you drop it and that there's a safety feature with the long trigger pull. Did a pencil go through the trigger and get pulled on when the pack was dropped?

Other than the obvious of keeping your gun out of the hands of kids--I would love for this to be a learning lesson about how this happened. I carry my gun in my purse--it's in a holder that covers the trigger, but if there's a danger of it going off if my purse is dropped--I'd sure like to know.

This kid needs to go down and be made an example of. This crap is getting way out of hand. If you look at his facebook he's all cocky about it, too. I hope he does at least several years of hard time. Don't let his but out on bail either.

When my son was a toddler we purchased a mesh screen with a rounded top and sides. It stood about 8 inches from the glass. We used little hooks to attach it to the wood surround. Worked great. It still heated up, but not enough to burn, just enough to warn him away. Common sense people. I can't believe this wouldn't be an obvious child proofing need.
