Actually, email started as an abbreviation for electronic mail. Used to be written as e-mail, to signify the e was short for electronic. Hence why email has a long e sound.

I drive my husband crazy because I say electronic with the first e as a long e instead of short e. He looked up the pronunciation to prove that I am wrong. But he says email with a long e, as do I, so I say I'm right. After all, email is short for electronic mail.

My husband and I are both engineers, and got our 6-year old daughter a physics workshop for Christmas last year. This year it will be a chemistry workshop. She has no hope of being the popular kid. ;)
