Okay for anyone who likes Asuka, who admires some aspects of her, or those who don't like her, but want to see her potential there is a fic I'd recommend. It focuses on the relationship of Asuka and Shinji and it has a SHITLOAD of spoilers for the entire series. It also has a great bunch of Misato...and Fbzr bs Xnjbeh, gubhtu ur'f abg gur sbphf ba gur fgbel.

I cannot recommend this fanfiction enough, it's just perfect in every single way.

It's the 'Wolf Tone' series. The first story is 'Wolf Tone on F#' by Moonsheen. It's on A03 and the follow up stories are also fantastic, I really love Asuka in this, so very much.

I think there is a reason why Asuka is the one foreign character. I think her direct ways, her ambition, everything like that falls more within what they would think comes from a girl who isn't Japanese. Rei is the opposite, quiet and obedient - Asuka is just a huge frothing ball of rage and loudness.

The reason I avoid tumblr when it comes to NGE (and specifically any of the female characters), is twofold. One is that there is a lot of gross porn...which I do not need to see (even when I blacklist almost every variation I can think of to avoid it, because a lot of those shits don't tag their stuff correctly and what can I expect from someone who posts shit like that anyway?), and second, almost everytime I've gone there someone is ranting about Asuka, using a lot of gendered slurs (usually guys).

I figure that they see Asuka as a possible love interest for Shinji, like Rei, and they feel that Asuka is lacking in that department, which opens up a huge can of worms of what men expect when they watch anime, and what they expect the female characters to be for the male protagonist,. I partly blame that on the history of gross harem anime which is still prolific to this day, and RPG which set up females as rewards for the protagonist, a combination of those factors - so any female that doesn't live up to the expectation of being the perfect waifu for the male protagonist, and is lacking in that way, seems to take the most scathing misogynist attacks from otaku. I just can't handle it really. It does me in. It makes me so very very tired, I should know better now, I really should but each time I am smacked with it online, it does me in.

That has always been my thought, that Misato was the killer, but I don't know if its' the consensus or if I am missing something and I'm wrong.

Have you read what Shinji's seiyuu has said about her role? She legit had a hard time because the role was brutal and she put everything into it. I can see why.
