The Bible makes clear the purpose. To witness and experience such a small nation conquer so miraculously struck fear into the hearts of their larger neighbors- it was considered a miracle for that time and place and resulted in fear and yes, admiration for the God of Israel amongst the other larger or more ruthless warrior nations.
In addition, and as repeatedly expressed in the Bible, those peoples who existed around the Hebrew tribes engaged in practices that would have corrupted the Israelite's obedience to YHWH had they been allowed to co-exist during the earilest days of that nation. (and it did eventually end up happening later) If it weren't for what so many consider the "massacres" of the OT there would be no Israel, no Jesus and no such thing as Christianity or Western civilization as we know it.
What YHWH needed to do to establish his righteous nation is not the same as what the slaves of Mohummad have been doing in the name of Allah. In the Bible, through victorious warfare and miracles, YHWH established a nation with distinct borders and tribal allotment to present to the world a showcase people who lived according to His very own laws, the result of which emerged the Messiah and Savior to the entire world!!Mohummad's Islam, on the other hand, is a great "Ishmaelite" apostasy that desires limitless world domination under a false law (that violates the Law of Moses in many significant areas) and seeks to enslave or slaughter those who follow YHWH wherever they may find them. To an atheist or a humanist it's all pointless bloodshed. But the difference is Night and Day to someone who is serious about which God, YHWH or Allah, is historically and theologically the right one.
The concepts of "war" and "violence" have too much cognitive dissonance attached to them these days for most people to understand that different circumstances can render such justified or condemned. Condemning the action of Israelites under the authority of God in the OT in favor of "peaceful" Jesus is a grave error that results in hatred and misunderstanding of Jews, and it generates confusion amongst Christians as to which God they actually worship. We who base our faith in the Bible have a duty to present Muslims with the truth about our faith without using revisionism and opinions to cover up what we don't understand in order to try and make it look "prettier". Peace is not the be all and end all as long as we are doomed to remain in a sinful world where evil lurks at every corner to destroy us. Choose your battles.

"Pride has its beginning when a person abandons the Lord, his maker. Pride is like a fountain pouring out sin, and whoever persists in it will be full of wickedness. That is why the Lord brought terrible punishments on some people and completely destroyed them. The Lord has overthrown kings and put humbler people in their place. The Lord has pulled up nations by the roots and established humbler ones in their place. The Lord has overthrown empires and completely devastated their lands. He destroyed some so completely that they are not even remembered anymore. The Creator never intended for human beings to be arrogant and violent."

I believe the book of revelations describes a lot of this..... right down to the fact that Muslims bow to a stone and they even have a banking system that discriminates against the non-halal complacent which could prevent someone from "buying or selling" if a sharia system consumes the globe. And as far as the formerly Jewish/Christian/Pagan middle east goes, this prophesy has already come to pass. Call me nuts if you want but it is more glaringly obvious by the day- people are looking for 666 but I can't think of another future world religion suddenly appearing that could cause the same damage that Islam has or surpass what Islam has already achieved.

she could be a God-believer who hasn't yet found a truth outside of Islam. (The barbarism and lunacy of Islam is not an automatic case for Atheism/Humanism.) So I'd like to know what she thinks about the Bible- this would expose whether she is a Muslim or simply ignorant of the alternatives.

It looks like if Robert ever wishes to be welcome in Britain he should re-name this site to "Violence in the Name of Particular Beliefs Watch"
