Authority figures must exist in modern wrestling! You brought up that it all started in 1997, well, because wrestling was different before that! You can't put Hogan vs Andre in 2014, something has obviously changed. And may i remind you that Authority figures were very very often involved in the greatest storylines of the last decades: Austin vs McMahon, WWE vs WCW, Evolution, Cm Punk's rise, Daniel Bryan's Wrestlemania dream come true.
The Autority Figure thing just has to be toned down or carefully organized; as of now or very recently we have/have had those Authority figures: The Board of Directors, CEO Vince McMahon, COO Triple H& Stephanie Mc Mahon, Raw GMs Brad Maddox&Vickie Guerrero, Smackdown GM Teddy Long, Executive vice president of talent relations Johnny Ace!!
That's too much, and the hierarchy of it is unclear: "could Vickie overrule Brad's decisions?" "Is HHH more important than Vince?" "The Board of Directors dethroned Vince and then HHH, is it the highest power?".
WWE needs an hierarchy, HHH needs to publicly gain the board of director's and Vince's powers and rule by himself or with Stephanie, then he could have his GMs, not as Authority figures, but as match makers that always have to cope up with his power (kinda like Bischoff and Long/Heyman did with Vince 10 years ago) and can make up for HHH's absences serving as his deputies so that it will be clear to whom superstars will have to look up to
