I for one will be listening to The National's "Don't Swallow the Cap" all day and trying not to cry. *sniff*

The day I decided to stop lurking and start commenting, my life became better. Just like that. Thanks for all the wonderfulness of this site, both from the articles and the comments. I love you guys.

I think that needs an asterisk. Depending on the celebrity, being snubbed by a celebrity is better than being acknowledged.

I CANNOT stop reading the Guardian liveblog. My productivity has been low for a week, I'm having to work at night to makeup for not getting anything done during the day. I cannot look away. It's amaaaaazing, in a terrible, awful way.

Yeah, I'm sure it's not. But I've never seen it (especially with guys in their 30s), and it hasn't happened with any of my friend's moms, so it's not super common, either, at least not where I am. Yet! Some day (fingers crossed)!

edit to add that I would be initially suspicious if the genders were reversed, too, and it were my dad and a much-younger woman.

That's how I read it, too.

Yeah, I really hate that narrative, and the "you're just jealous" thing seems to get thrown at women a lot in all kinds of situations. I am probably too negative and untrusting, and because that much of an age difference is not that common, yet it's not uncommon for it to happen in a "I'm using them" context, I would be concerned. But I'd keep my mouth shut until I had a real basis to be concerned.

I don't see jealousy. I mean, I'm sure it's true that nobody has written to Mallory yet about the older man/younger woman dynamic. But I've personally known people who've said (and have seen others write to other columnists) that they are concerned this much younger person is using their dad. That's actually kind of a theme that shows up periodically in advice columns. And for various reasons, it is unusual to see a 30 yo man with a 60yo woman.

I totally agree with Mallory that if there aren't any of those suspicious factors, she should let it go. But I don't think the letter is a sign that the LW is jealous. I would not be jealous if my mom started dating a man who is younger than I am, and I would definitely be nervous for her heart until I'd seen enough of him to trust he wasn't using her. I wouldn't say anything to her and I'd be nice to him, but I'd be watching.

I guess I phrased that badly. I just meant that there is a hierarchy in almost any work place. That means there will rules you don't like but have to follow. You can ask, but if you're told no, you deal.

And they asked, were told no, then got a petition about it. This was not the thing to push back on in an internship--which, by definition, is going to be short-term.

I cannot stop watching the liveblog.
