According to http://www.route66news.com/2009/11/11/end-of-the-trail-sign-dedicated-at-santa-monica-pier/
"The Santa Monica Pier was dedicated Tuesday morning (November 10, 2009) as the official western terminus of Route 66 during a ceremony with a replica of an “End of the Trail” sign that once graced the nearby intersection of Ocean Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard for years."

Hi Kevin,
I suggest you to book hotels well in advance for popular places such as Grand Canyon (Williams, Flagstaff), Santa Fe, Chicago... but also for iconic motels on the Route (Blue Swallow, Wagon Wheel, Wigwam, Munger Moss...)
