Good point, raffpantucci. The U.S. didn't designate al-Shabaab as a foreign terrorist organization until 2008, and it took the Australians till 2009. Does anybody know if Denmark, the EU, or the UN have designated al-Shabaab yet?

Hey, surj, I'm OPPOSED to jihad. I'm OPPOSED to scapegoating bankers. Did you actually read my comment, or did you just read the quotation that I was criticizing?

"Instead of assassinating such leaders who help the people, the FBI should be raiding the bankers who are behind the growing hunger and homelessness..."

What a disgusting statement against bankers. It's unsurprising though--banker hatred is apparently quite common among our domestic jihadists. It probably doesn't help matters that we mercilessly ridicule our own banking system, too.

"Crucifixes...could disturb children who were not Christians." Yet the apologists for Islam have tried to convince us for years that they respect Jesus and regard him as an important prophet of their faith. So why should a crucifix disturb them??? Thanks, European Court of Human Rights, for carrying water for jihad.

I didn't think I would come to appreciate illegal immigration from Mexico into the U.S. as much as I do now. I would far prefer Juan to be America's new #1 baby name than Mohammed!

Robert is quite right to point out the Islamic focus of the Taliban's announcement. The Taliban doesn't directly rely on nationalism, economic injustice, or any of the factors that sociologists or the media typically blame for terrorism. The Taliban achors their argument directly in Islam itself, and tells the Afghanis, "They should choose the way of the strongholds of Jihad."

If you want to know what motivates the jihadists, just read what they write!

You make a persuasive case. Your example shows that there are real consequences for who controls the state apparatus in Muslim countries. To piggyback on your point, it was the Taliban, not Rabbani or the other Afghan warlords, that ultimately gave sanctuary to Al Qaeda, which allowed them to prepare the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The outcome would have been much different without the Taliban in charge.

I'm concerned about jihad. But I'm even more concerned about the possibility of well-funded, oil-enriched, state-sponsored, militarized, or nuclearized jihad, which means we do have an interest in what kind of governments are in charge of Saudia Arabia, Pakistan, etc...

Oh, Eastview, that's an easy one! Unicorn meat is halal, of course, unless you're dealing with a domesticated unicorn, which would obviously be halal. You may think all these dietary laws are acrane & stupid, but if the Koran & Hadith didn't address such possibilities, we'd never know what to eat!

By the way, I have some dragon steaks in the freezer. Can anybody tell me which legal school of Islam permits the eating of dragonflesh?

Informative comments! Thank you for taking the time to research this further.

It makes sense that Arabs would have been circumspect about seafaring back in the day (except maybe for the pearl divers along the Persian Gulf coast), so Muhammad had to offer an extra incentive to get his followers out on the waters.

I suspect that encouraging his people to take to the seas was also part of Islam's expansionist, aggressive, territorial ambitions.

It is interesting to note that there are hardly any landlocked Muslim countries, but that no Muslim country except Turkey has a powerful navy.

I'm still curious about what's going on inside the Somali pirates' heads. Does some imam fill their minds with ideas about the money jihad, and the double reward you pointed out for "aqua-jihad," and bless their ship before they embark? Or are these hadith passages already common knowledge among all Muslims?

Alex, the Koran 16:115 (and other verses) says, "He hath forbidden for you only carrion and blood and swineflesh..." Shellfish are scavengers that eat carrion (dead, rotting flesh), so they too are considered unclean in Islam.

However, there is the competing verse in the Koran 5:96 that permits the eating of "water game." This discrepancy explains why the different legal schools of Islam can't agree, and that's why this braindead sheik has to waste all our time by analyzing whether eating mermaid stew would be haram or halal.
