May those bitches of nuns who tortured and abused those girls and made Slaves of them burn in hell. May the priests and Irish authorities who colluded in their indeterminate periods of detention in those houses of horrors meet a similar fate( those who have already not done so).

May those brave and tenacious women who have lived on despite the vicious attempts of their captors to crush them completely gain at leat a smidgen of solace from whatever compensation they can wring out of the powers that be,

Shame on the Catholic Church. As I write this I think why bother suggesting they be shamed as they , in their arrogance and the incredible powers that they wield, are incapable of feeling shame.

Jaki McCartick is the best short story writer I've encountered in well over 20 years. I am just coming to the end of the Scattering. I do not have words to express how incredibly taken I am with this collection. The Jailbird is a masterpiece. The prose is brilliant and the funny one liners in what is essentially such a tragic tale have blown me away. For example, " Norman Bates is alive and well and living in Castlemoyne". As for the main protagonist's fantasies re modes of slaughtering his cruel, sociopathic and domineering mother - outstanding.1976 and the Congo are for me two other profoundly affecting stories.

I was weaned on Frank O' Connor, first read his short stories when I was a child of 9 or 10, and have revisited them again and again over the last few decades. Frank has always been the pinnacle to me when it comes to the short story. Jaki McCarrick is, to me, now his equal.

Thank you, Jaki. This is a collection that I will treasure.

Who is this "we" who says it's time for Adams to go?? Why should he? What purpose would it serve? He has been asked the question re the late Jean McConville. Asked and answered, now give it a rest.

Adams has suffered a lot in his time. Why this persecution and calumnation of him now? Who cares what the reactionary editor of the Telegraph thinks of him or his leadership?! It's not as though one expects ithe editor to be laudatory of Adams, but let's face it is he so deluded, or does he occupy such a parallel universe that he's smug enough to believe that anyone with a Republican bone in their body would remotely take on board his opinion??

You are a mindless, arrogant and gullible moron. Republicans everywhere must be rolling in mirth at your primary school level drivel.
