It's a poorly-done genre shift. I signed on for a dystopia, got two-thirds of one, and had my last book hijacked by a heavy-handed 'horrors of war' story that was so relentlessly bleak it became boring. If I'd wanted military sci-fi, there are plenty of places I can go for that.

Psst. The point of a Rickroll is to hide it.

I'm not a zombie person, but I really want to read that book while at the same time having no desire to add some extra grimness to my library.

And just yesterday I was comparing one of my favorite yarns to Susan. I firmly believe that if Cascade 220 was a person, it would be one of PTerry's no-nonsense girls who takes no crap and gets the job done.

Well, it does look like a cross between a puppy and a jumping spider.

Ah, I see you have met actual children. I was beginning to wonder if nobody here had.

The irony being that I'm having a difficult time finding some here and now.

THIS. EVERY BIT THIS. I hate the fluctuating visible tech level in this series.

I can't bring myself to be outraged at Coin's comment on Annie. There is no judgment of her worth as a human being, no dismissal of her in any other context than what in the current parlance we'd call her competence to stand trial. From the sound of everything we've heard about her so far, the fact that Annie is traumatized and emotionally damaged to the point that she is unlikely to have full control over her actions is public knowledge; it's not as if Coin is pulling it out of thin air.

YOU DON'T CHAIN PEOPLE UP IN THE DARK AND TORTURE THEM. That's all there is to it.
